Ruger Hawkeye barrel markings
« on: November 22, 2009, 09:19:25 AM »
It's a Left-handed Ruger M77 Hawkeye 30-06 Sprg in stainless with laminate stock and Swift 4-12x40mm scope.  Very accurate rifle too.   :)

I'm curious as to this additional marking on the barrel, and not sure what it means.   The marking appears to be put on after the 'bead-blast' finish because it is shiny metal in the grooves, whereas the other markings are the same satin color as the finish.

What is it?  A proof marking?  It kind of looks like an R with a partial circle around it.

A second question I have:  What is the purpose of the hole on the side of the receiver?  Is it there in case of a case failure to provide a place to vent the gases safely?

Yes the hole is for gas to escape if the case fails

Thanks for the reply.   :)  I was figuring it was for that, but wasn't sure.

The barrel marking thing isn't a big deal, but it does look nasty (pics don't show it clearly).  More like someone just wacked the barrel with a cheap marking tool and didn't do it right.   :-\  The other markings on the barrel look professional and even.

More importantly, the rifle shoots great and is reliable.

I would say this is "most" important.  ;)  Sounds like you have a real shooter there.

Thanks!   I don't hunt; just shoot targets at the range and collect firearms.    It has to hit bullseye's, but I also buy them on visual appearance.  Guess that's why I like single-action revolvers too.  ;D

I contacted Ruger and their response:

This is a stamp to show we proof tested the firearm.
