I've been hunting on my wife's grandparent's place for 12 years now and almost every year have spent some time out calling for coyotes and in that time I've only seen one and didn't even have a rifle with me at the time. This past Saturday, after checking a couple of spots for deer, I walked up on a big coyote approaching the gut pile from my father-in-law's deer from that morning. I at first thought it was the neighbor's dog because he was so fat. But after a minute I ruled out all the local dogs. I guess he smelled me because he got a bit nervous and came toward me a bit, then turned and I saw his color, tail, and head shape and realized it was a yote. He walked a few feet back the way he came then turned broadside. One shot from my 30-06 at 125yds was all it took. To be honest, I'm surprised I hit him because I rarely hunt with that rifle. But, I finally got a coyote. Now I can die happy.
