Over penetrating Yellow Jacket
« on: March 10, 2010, 08:58:13 AM »
I bought a Morrell Yellow Jacket Supreme bag type and am a little disappointed that it doesn't stop all my arrows(95%). I even had one arrow penetrate with enough energy to pierce a 1/2" plywood backstop. That was at 30 yards. The shot wasn't on an edge it was through on of the bullseyes. Faulty target? Its not an over-power issue I think. I'm only shooting a 330gr(guessed, 7.5gr @ 27", 85gr tip, blazer vanes) arrow at 250 fps(chronied) for some 43ish ftlbs.

Have no problem with my Yellow Jacket. I shoot both 350g and 445g from my Mathews Outback at 280fps and 270s fps. You bag sounds understuffed.

I use a generic Block target which works well. The burlap type bags don't seem to hold the arrow for me.

Did you try stomping it?

I have this problem with all bags, but I shoot with broadheads mainly. To stop my practice tips from penetrating completely thru my bags, I filed a small flat spot on the very end of the tips.

Hope this helps.

Lay it flat on something hard and then jump up and down on it.  it Compacts the stuffing when it works loose.  I do it on the bags probably once every 3 months.

Stomp on it and turn it around and shoot the other side awhile. Its best to shoot both sides about the same amount.

You should never shoot bags with broadheads.....But with field points, I keep all my old bags and stack them. If you shoot enough you will eventually shoot through any bag.

When using a bag target, you need to hang them so they have some movement when the arrow hits them.  Most back targets are for low poundage bows anyway.

Heres some more instances. 20 yds, 55lb Firecat, 320gr arrow. 26" draw.

As Montanan already said, hang the bag. Do not lean it up against a board, it must be able to move a little to help absorbe the arrow.

Example.
1. Take a 1x4 and nail it between two post. Box it as hard as you can and the board will break.
2. Next take a 1x4 and hang it from a string and again box it as hard as you can and youll find you cant break it..

I'm not actually trying to get you to break boards or your hand, but I think you'll get the point.

Try splitting wood with an axe while the wood is hanging in the air with out something solid, you can't do it

Oh...Never mind thats dangerous too, JUST HANG YOUR BAG if you feel better with wood behind it then put it about a foot behind it and the bag will stop your arrows.

Mkay, I just wasn't sure if this was actually a "bag" target or not. Not like the usual bag types Ive seen. I did move it about a foot in front of the board and still had one penetrate the board. Now to find a place to hang it...
