Saturday morning I took the wife out so she could get her deer. When we arrived and got ready I told her where we sit that deer could come in from behind us so she needed to be as still as possible. This has never happened before that I know of, but they very well could sneak up behind us. Well we got situated and all tucked in for a deer dropping good time, and about fifteen minutes after shoot time I started glassing and getting a good look around. My wife was shooting a Savage .243 and I got out the old H&R .308. The .308 has never ever been into the field just to the range a couple of times to get it ready in case the need ever came up.
After a few minutes of John Wayneing my rifle looking through the scope I decided I needed a stick to keep it from moving so much I got a headache. My wife was using most all of my equipment I use when I rifle hunt which isn't much due to I bow hunt mainly. Well anyway I started to look around for a stick to prop my rifle. After looking to my sides I looked behind us and there they where three does 15 yards away looking at us.
Needless to say within a second all I could see was the tails, and I raised my H&R scoped one of the three and BANG. I turned back around, and my wife asked did you get her. I told her I really don't think so since they where at a dead run and just after the shot all three went over a ridge and disappeared. I just couldn't believe that I did just exactly what I told her not to do. We finished our hunt about four hours later, and I told her that we would go over that ridge to make sure and look a bit for any sign of blood before we went home, she said lets go. After about a seventy yard walk we topped the ridge and to my suprize there she was all twisted up deader than a nail. I don't take shots that I am not sure about ever, and for some reason I had a good feeling about this one, and it is the very first deer I have ever even lifted a gun to while it was running dumb luck I guess. Everyone knows what that gut feeling is and I just had it that day.
Now my H&R has a very wram spot in my cabinet, and will have many more years of service for me and my family.
