Is it legal to preditor hunt in KS at night?
« on: March 12, 2010, 01:45:51 PM »
I just got back from a stay in N. California around Red Bluff.  One of my wife's relatives is a trapper and depredation hunter there.  Kills lots of cats, Bobcats and cougars.  He hunts at night, legally.  But must use solid copper bullits and cage traps.
But he can hunt at night.
It seems to me that I read that you cannot hunt at night in KS, but after talking to him and hearing of how much fun it is I thought I would ask.

You can hunt coyotes at night in Kansas but you cannot use any artificial light.  Basically that means you hunt by moonlight and unless you have snow on the ground good luck.  You can spotlight game at night with artificial light but you cannot have ANY weapon in the vehicle ie, rifle, pistol, bow, etc.
Yesterday is history--tomorrow is a mystery--today is a gift!---That is why they call it the present!

Sounds like a good reason to buy a night vision scope for that coyote gun.

Who would have thunk that California is more progressive about removing destructive pests than Kansas.
Doesn't KDWP know that coyotes are num 1 cause of fawn death?

I'm fine with the rule.  Search lights and rifles will be much worse on the deer population than coyotes will.

I might have thought the same way until I started reading about studies that show how coyotes now take 80% of the fawn population.
My friend in California says the same.
Want to see more deer. shoot a coyote.  I photograph and while I am sitting watching I see packs of them roaming.
Talk to some ranchers, they have also seen the dramatic increase and damage to their herds.
Coyotes and now the presence of mountain lions (they take a deer a week) varmint hunting is a good thing.
We see the cats often now, NE Kansas, it is a fact, I saw my first one in 2000 crossing the road, and I lived and hunted in Nevada so I know what a cougar looks like.
