Back more years than I care to remember I use to use a boot dressing that I cannot find today. We always called it Norwegian Boot Dressing but I am not sure that is what is was called. I got started on it from my mom who taught me to hunt and used it for up until I used the last of what I had about 10 years ago. I have searched ever since I tossed out the last can and cannot find it.
It came in liquid or paste form. The liquid came in a dark dark green can with black lettering. The container it came in was was about 3" in dia and 4" tall with a screw on cap. It came with an application dauber in the can. The consistency was that of a good maple syrup (thinner than honey, thicker than water)..
The paste was in a tin round container and the top slid over the bottom, it was round. It was also a very dark green with black lettering and about the size of a large can of saddlesoap. about 1" tall and 5" in diameter.
Both products were a warm brown color, almost a dark honey color.
I think we originally got it from Herters when they were in business.
I haven't been able to find it and my daughter listened to me talk about it for 2 decades and wants to try it but she can't find it. I have checked local shops, the internet, shoemakers and nobody knows what it was called. Some remember it some remember using it but nobody can remember what it was called.
Any help you can offer is appreciated.
While I am asking there is one more thing. As a kid at the ripe old age of 8 I remember my Dad taking me to the little local store that was located in the middle of nowhere. It had wood rickety floors that had raised spots around all the nails used to anchor it. There was a big ole fan and no air. We would always make the trip to the store for one thing. Black Licorice. They sold it in round sticks about 3 1/2 to 4" long that were square cut on the ends. It came in a box of about 200 (box was longer than wide) which I think was a red and white but I am not sure of that. You could buy one at a penny or the box if you wanted, which my Dad always did. They were not individually wrapped but just layed in the box like small shotgun shells.
The unique thing about the this Licorice was that you could put it in your pocket and it wouldn't get all over everthing. It wasn't soft and it wasn't hard it was about the consistency, for other licorice coniseurs, of the licorice pipes they use to sell only it was not smoot but kind of rough around the outside. I have checked every candy source I can find and nobody has it or even knows of it. Again if anyone can steer me onto it I would greatly appreciate it.
Guess I am just trying to recapture and share a little of my childhood with my grown kids..
Thanks in advance...
