DEER/TRUCK ACCIDENT

I WAS COMING HOME FROM WORK WEDNESDAY NIGHT ABOUT 11:10 PM. WHEN I TURNED ONTO THE STREET WHERE I LIVE I SAW A DEER COMING AT ME IN THE CORNER OF MY EYE.  I WENT TO THE SHOULDER AND THE DEER RAN INTO THE SIDE OF MY TRUCK JUST BEHIND THE FRONT TIRE IN THE SMALL PART OF THE FENDER. HIS BUTT CAME AROUND AND HIT THE DOOR, (LARGE DENT).  HE WAS AN 8 POINT AND WAS A WALL HANGER.  I WASN'T TRAVELING FAST ABOUT 40 MPH AND I WASN'T HURT.  I TURNED AROUND AND WENT BACK TO WHERE THE COLLISION HAPPENED BUT I COULDN'T FIND THE DEER.  A NICE FAT CITY DEER ON THE PROWL.

My wife had one run into the side of her car once. She thought it was dead, she got out to call me on the cell and while she was talking it shook its head and got up and ran off. We call that the deer road now!

They are resilient animals!

But you could never hunt deer in the city!
Don't want to hurt BAMBI!!!
If they let responsible hunters shoot a few of them then this would not happen as often.
The same ones who don't want you to kill them are the ones who complain the most when it is there car or the wife's flowers that get munched.

deer sure can do a lot of damage to a car or truck. if the come thru the windshield it usually spells very serious injury or death to the occupants. the cities where deer roam should allow some form of highly controlled hunting..archery. my daughter lives in new jersey and there are large grups wandering in every block. people there scream about the constant damage and worse yet will do nothing to thin them out.

Hunting deer in ANY urban situation is a dangerous piece of work.
The game wardens should be removing these---Yea, like that is all they have on their plate.

Then the local populous should be allowed a chance.  I know in Grand Haven they had a culling project.....I don't know if it's over or not.....but they can kill as many as they want.  There was a resident who shot 4 or 5.....I don't what happened yet...but he's in the fire.

My wife killed one a last year that ran into the side door of her caravan. I was lucky, was able to remove the door panels and push most of the damage back out.

The City of Rhinelander, WI. has had "City" hunting for a few years now. But, it's probably the exception rather than the rule. I'm pleased to see that there are at least a few places left in the world where the "tree loving, bunny hugers" (well stated, Tom) have not completely taken over. City brings back bow hunt to help control deer herd

By Rhinelander Daily News Staff

There’s been much talk of the low number of deer in some areas of the Northwoods, but the population in the city of Rhinelander is still strong and bow hunters will once again have the opportunity to help control the herd.

The City of Rhinelander is renewing the bow hunt for deer within city limits for the 2009-2010 season. The bow season will open Sept. 12 and run until Nov. 20. It will be closed during the regular gun and muzzleloader season and re-open on Dec. 10, running through Jan. 31.

Individuals interested in bow hunting deer within the city limits must register at the city administrator’s office at 135 S. Stevens Street, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Application forms will be provided for hunters and city landowners who wish to allow their property to be hunted.

Bow hunters must have a valid State of Wisconsin bow license and must present their backtag upon application for the program.

Hunters and hunting properties that were authorized last year are not automatically re-registered and those interested in participating have to complete a new application for this year’s hunting season. Hunters must agree to a short waiting period after submitting an application to allow the Rhinelander Police Department to perform a criminal background check. Upon approval, hunters will be admitted to the program.

The state of Wisconsin has awarded the city of Rhinelander antlerless deer permits. Therefore, permits issued by the city are for antlerless deer only. Antlered deer may only be hunted and harvested if the hunter has their own WIDNR issued buck tag.

The city will issue antlerless deer permits two at a time to hunters who have been admitted to the program. New this year is a requirement that hunters in the program must notify the city administrator’s office within 48 hours of harvesting a deer within the city. This will allow the city to maintain up-to-date harvest counts for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, program participants and media. Once hunters have filled both permits, they may be issued two more. As long as a hunter maintains good standing within the program there is no limit to the total number of antlerless permits that may be issued, but the city reserves the right to issue only two permits at a time.

All hunters must hunt from a stand elevated at least 6 feet off the ground. Deer tagged with a city permit must be registered at the BP Hodag Pump & Pantry gas station located at the intersection of County Highway W and North Stevens Street or at the Westside Shell gas station located at the intersection of County Highway K and State Highway 47 until 6 p.m.

Last year, a safe and successful hunt harvested 33 deer inside the city limits and helped to reduce the city’s deer herd problems.

The City and the Rhinelander Food Pantry have also teamed together again during for this hunting season. Cleaned and registered deer may be donated to the Rhinelander Food Pantry by contacting Jane Motowski at (715) 369-7237 or Guy Hansen at (715) 282-5810 during the bow hunting season.

   A cousin of mine in West Virginia told me that it was the insurance companies that lobbied the state a few years ago to increase the bag limit on deer there. It seems they were paying out so many dollars in insurance claims they wanted something done.

The biggest problem with city deer & Turkey , where I live is the damage they do to the landscape (Like my wife's roses) Most of the major damage to the vehicles, is in the rural areas, where the speed is increased.We have vast wilderness areas where I live in Oregon. I would think the powers that rule could trap most of these and release them in the wilds, away from most human traffic. I bet they could get lots of volunteer help.Would they do this? PROBABLY NOT!.......They would actually have to work, to earn the salaries the tax payers dole out to them.
