Help w/ 444 loads
« on: November 21, 2009, 11:25:02 AM »
I have been loading cast for a long tome, have a load for my 240 gr 429421 that is ok. I just bought a new Lee mold that was on sale, it is a 310 gr 430 dia mold, flatnose. I am looking for load data on that weight. I have found heavy load data, that is not what I want. I want to load for a NEF that is 1/20 twist, and want something in the 1200/1500 fps bracket. I thought the longer fatter bullet might prove more accurate, and I intend to shoot mostly wheelweight metal, so I am not after speed. I use mostly  Blue Dot, 2400, RL7, and XMP5744 for my cast loads at present.

Maybe this will help.  http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm

FWIW, this is how my H&R .444M shoots the 355gr Beartooth, considerably faster than you're looking for tho.  ;)

Thank you very much. I have a 4 pound can of unique in my magazine. If it turns out to be at all accurate, about 12-14 gr of Unique would be just great. I have a Marlin that I use for the jacketed bullets, and I bought the Handi just for cast loads.

I looked a little closer at other loads on this site, because I was a bit shocked at the accuracy. But that was lever guns I suppose, and with a 1-38 rifling if they were shot 10 + years ago. I currently am shooting 20gr of 2400 under a 240 gr Keith bullet (429421) and am getting about 1.8 inch accuracy, but I do not know the velocity. I also shoot the same bullet over 14 gr of Blue Dot and got about 1.5", should be about 1250+ fps. My intermediate Lyman book ( I have 1968, 1987, and 2006) lists the accuracy load for ALL cast bullet weights as 17gr of unique. All the books only go up to 250 gr weight. After looking at the data for both the 444 and the 45/70, I think I will be able to come up with a good load. I will let you know, and thanks again,
