Ditto! I did a test recently on another forum, and used several lubes on finish nails, exposed to salt water, and the Olive oil won. After three weeks the O. oil was still rust free, and the nails using WD40, Hoppe's gun oil, Bore Butter and a couple of others were a rusty mess. Especially the WD 40. I didn't try Billistol and Rem oil.

I use O oil as a patch lube also.

I don't know why that should be, they all seem reasonable tests, systematically conducted by testers who have nothing to gain by staging the results, but the results just don't correlate from one to another, like in one test WD-40 rates near the bottom while in another it is tops.

BEATS ME!, but this is the way things turned out in my backyard un-scientific test!

Bore Butter or olive oil inside the bore and on exterior metal surfaces works for me on my .50 GPR, 1860 Army, and 12 Bore percussion double gun.

3 in one machine oil. used this on all my firearms in all kinds of weather for close to 30+ years. had short flings with others but alway come back.

Have used and like Bore butter but am just as likely to use the rem oil for the shorter storage.

Good test's Tim, although the first link had been removed by the poster.

I think that the real good news is that most of us here shoot, clean, and lube enough to prevent the corrosion from gaining a foot hold.

First link works fine.

I think cleaning good first is the secret, I've never had a problem with Bore Butter myself, others cuss it.

I've got a GM barreled TC Hawken flinter in my basement that hasn't been shot in over 10yrs, the only thing I've ever used in the bore is Bore Butter, it's still like new.

WD-40 should only be used to displace water, it has near zero protective properties. In our full scale cannons we always wash them out with hot soapy water, dry them as best we can, then wipe them out with WD-40 to remove all traces of water (especially in the rifled tubes) and then coat them liberally with motor oil. Barrels treated like this never rust, even after long term storage. In the past barrels treated with WD-40 only always began rusting at an alarming rate within 30 days.

WD-40 will also turn into a hard brown varnish in the areas that you cannot get to with a rag such as the lower sides of a barrel normally protected by the stock. I was glad that I found this out before spraying into the inner-works of any of my S/A Revolvers.

Olive oil or Break Free CLP.......I use WD-40 more as a solvent than anything else and have for years but it only last for a day or so. I've never had a problem with WD-40. In fact it's great for removing the varnish (from old oil)that builds up on metal parts.

I have stored guns with rig universal in them,and I see now you can use it for a ball patch lube.I just noticed on the web it has been gone awhile and birchwood casey's is bringing it back out.Shows how old I am still using the original tub and didn't realize they were gone awhile.
