45 colt loads w/ Hornady 250 gr. XTP
« on: October 19, 2003, 05:27:00 PM »
Bought a box of the XTP to try some loads for Uberti Cattleman, 4 3/4 inch barrel.  Ended up at 9.2 gr. Unique, Rem. primers, Starline brass.  I am guessing this load at about 930 fps out of this revolver, also thinking it is close to max spec of 14000 cup for Colt SAA clones.   No signs of excess pressure.  Test fired it into phone books and mushroomed but lower half remained intact, just as advertised.  Actually penetreated a little deeper than laser cast 250 gr. RNFP with a 9 gr. Unique load.
May use this as a short range deer load ( if one walks right below the stand).   Any comments as to safety of load and use for deer (or self defense against bear if no rifle is at hand).  Thanks.

It will work great on deer.  I used to load them in my 45LC and now put them with sabots and shoot them in my muzzleloader.

Ron,
I also like the 250 XTP's, I shoot them in assorted brass, but prefer starline, CCI 300 primers, and 11.2 grains of AA#5.......I'm guessing 1300 or so FPS outta my 16"Winchester scoped trapper. I am getting about 2" groups at 50 yds, and around 4" or a tad more at 100 yds. This load has accounted for 2 Deer and 1 Turkey so far.
I also use the same load with 255 gr SWC in my ruger Vaquerro and my Smith..
