Scope and rings on a M70 Featherweight?
« on: November 16, 2009, 08:40:15 AM »
Hello guys,

Within a couple of days I will have received my brand new M70 Featherweight in 6.5 SWEDE.

I'm thinking of mounting a Leupold 3-9x 50mm scope on it and have a few questions:
- What rings and mount, preferably Leupold, should I go for?
- The rifle has open sights on it, so how low can the mount be?

Also, does anyone know whether this is a post -92 or not? Considering it is a brand new rifle, I am guessing it is a post -92.

Thanks

My Model 70 featherweight Classic 6.5x55 was issued sans iron sights, as was every other post-81 M70 FW i've ever run across - so I'm afraid I can't help you regarding height with a 50mm objective scope, especially w/iron sights.  I would presume high rings, and maybe an extension front ring, would be in order.

I had a 2-7x33mm Leupold mounted in a Leupold mount, using standard/low rings, FWIW.

But have recently switched to a Trijicon 1.25-4x24 Safari in the same rings/mount.

Any scope of 44mm or larger will require high rings.
I have several 44s and a couple of 50s on some of my model 70s and they all took high rings.
On a 50mm you might have to go to extra high if you plan to put a flip up scope cover on the front.
