SLUGS?
« on: July 13, 2010, 05:14:44 PM »
Greetings,

I have read thru the discussions about buckshot for bears & it raised a question for me about bears & shotguns.

For protection against big black bears, or grizzlies, would you use a Foster style slug, or a sabot type slug. Which brand would you prefer, or even better, have seen used to confirm that it really works.

Notice I said for protection, not hunting. I am wondering about adequate penetration as it would get real important on larger bears.

Thanks

Smooth bore - Foster type.
Rifled Barrel - Sabot.
But either way you are talking about a short range.
If you want it as protection-  I would use what has the most horse power and you can shoot well and quickly.
I since this is protection and not hunting I would look at Foster or breneke.

I would second what mcwoodduck has to say, it is a matter of seconds...................I mean seconds and putting something into them is what you want, that doesn't mean they will turn.  It only means you hit them, the follow up shots should be important as well...

1 1/8 oz. foster slug . that chunck of lead at 1200-1300 FPS will make a dent . Also most shotguns set up for defense ( read light to carry , some with only pistol grips ) will most likely be smooth bore.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

When hunting duck and geese in bear areas i carry an extra gun loaded with 3.5 inch heavi-shot slugs . They may be 1 1/4 or larger . The extra gun is little trouble in a boat and blind.

I have a Remington 870 smooth bore, but could use a rifled choke tube. I wasn't sure if a soft Foster style would penetrate or flatten out. Also, I wasn't sure if a sabot had enough weight for good penetration, so ....

All I have ever shot was Foster for deer, but it looks like I need to get some Brennekes to see how they compare.

Thanks for the response.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward a 3" mag for maximum wallop. I have several rifles to choose from if hunting, but was looking fo somethig to carry along while camping, fishing, etc.

Thanks

I tried a borrowed one with a pistol grip - it was as bad as I expected so I went back to a standard stock.

Good point, but I'll be afoot most of the time.

I like the Remington 1 1/4oz Buckhammer in smooth or rifled they work great. Most sabot to me are to light for what you are tring to do. The Federal 1 1/4 oz is also a good shell for smooth and have seen many town bears taken with them by LE

I had a Stevens 311 that was cut back to 18.5 inches and I used the Federal, Remington & Winchester 1 oz 2 3/4 inch rifled slugs, and it was a great up close gun. At 25 yards, I could hit a softball with both barrels. I sold the gun, and now wish I never did. Short and 2 quick shots and the accuracy was great.

The brenneke black magic or similar slug are the best.  The brenneke are harder than most foster style slugs and work much better for big bear defense.
