Decisions on a SB2 357 Max
« on: November 24, 2009, 03:17:14 PM »
I haven't posted in awhile just been too busy with the house construction it's taking too long >:( I have an opportunity to pick up an H&R rifle from a friend of mine who's grandfather past away this past spring. I did look at the rifle and it looked like it was never fired but to my surprise when I looked at the barrel and it was marked SB2 "Ultra" in 357 Maximum! The serial number on the receiver starts with HL so I'm assuming it was built in 1997. I'm curious to know when did H&R stopped making the 357 Maximum or was it special order? Also, the dilemma I have is this: I already have a H&R 357 Maximum but it's on a model 058 so I'm limited on putting any new barrels. I like that this particular H&R is newer and can install other barrels but what to do with the other 357 Maximum barrel? Sell it? I don't know if it can be done but I would love to have another 35 caliber rifle barrel built maybe in 356 Winchester.

If you like the way the 058 shoots and handles,  rechamber the newer SB 2 gun to 356 Win.   Jed

The only barrels H&R will fit to any '96-'99 frame are shotgun, 357mag and 44mag, see the FAQs build year list.

Well that stinks! :( I was hoping to add other barrels besides the 357mag & 44mag. My friend hasn't decided what he wants for it but if the price is right I might just grab it.

Tim, I just went through the FAQs (again) on this, and it seems to be just a dodge by H&R to avoid liabliity.  I personally wouldn't hesitate to put a high pressure barrel on one of these frames, shooting factory or less loads.  I wouldn't hotrod anything.  Do you think I'd be at risk?

An adder:  I would think if there was anything seriously wrong with any of these frames they would have been recalled.

They will fit the original chambering to it if the barrel is defective, so what does that tell ya! ; :D

Tim,   Isn't this the same SB 2 frame that they built the 35 Whelen on in 1996 ?    Jedman
