Rifle season a bust

Well as the title says, my Maine rifle season was a bust. The deer seem to be few and far between around here. There was a nice 8 point taken in the area I hunt. Hope this winter will be mild so the deer may start to make a comeback, especially in the northern WMD's.

I'm in central NH on the southern edge of the White Mountains and my season has been a bust so far (caught the swine flu right in time for my hunting vacation so I have very little time in the woods). Our deer population is in the same shape as yours, way down because of 2 consecutive bad winters with lots of snow. This coming weekend is our last weekend for rifle so I'll be out in the woods as much as possible.

I live in Southern NH in the Monadnock area.  I shot and killed the only deer I saw after 4 full days of hunting up in Pittsburg during the Muzzle loader season.  Saw more moose than deer and a ton of coyote sign.  I think up there the moose eat all the forage up to a height that the deer have trouble reaching and the coyotes are having an effect on the population as well.  I saw a few does down here but nothing with horns.  Some guys are having success near Concord in some of the fields there.

I used to live down your way in Peterborough years ago. I have the same problem in the area I live now, I see way more moose than deer. If I ever win the moose lottery I'll be all set. There's definitely a lot more deer near Concord and out in the seacoast area. At least you got one in Pittsburgh, it's tough hunting the big woods up there.

It's official, my season was a bust also. Today was the last day of rifle. I saw a doe yesterday but that was the only deer I saw all season. Does are not allowed in my area with a rifle, otherwise I had an easy 35 yard shot on her. Next year I'm going to get back into bow hunting so I'll have a much longer season plus you're allowed to shoot does with a bow.

I managed to get a fork in about 30 min. on the first day of rifle season. black powder season I saw only 3 deer. I hunt the concord area of N.H. Cant say that there are a ton of deer where I hunt. Lots of hunters though.

I'm in Maine on the southwest side of Sebago Lake. The season has been tough. I've seen does, but all were with fawns. The one buck I saw was an old gray face, and I had more fun practicing my calling with him than I think I would have eating him. But he was harvested, just not by me. I am going tomorrow, in the 10 degree weather they're saying it will be, but since it's the last day of muzzle loader I have to give it a try. I know a lot of people who are going deerless this year, so I guess MDIF&W's statement about this being the worst deer season in 25 years has some validity. I saw five moose in the stand (three bulls, cow & calf). Maybe I'll get drawn one of these years?  ???
