300grain cast .44 mag loads with 2400?
« on: November 26, 2009, 01:47:44 PM »
Anybody got good load data?  I just loaded some LBT LFN gc's using 17. 2 grains and dropped it down to 15.7 but haven't fired those yet.  The 17.2 were stout, not too hot but hot enough.  The 15.7 is the load I had scribbled in my Sierra load book from years back.
I'm shooting them in a Magna-port Custom SBH 4 1/2".
thanks in advance! ???

Not a good powder choice in my opinion. I'd stick with H110/W296 if it were me.

Thanks Graybeard...I have a couple of lbs of H-110 I've been using exclusively in my .45 Colt BH's.  I can't quite recall what I'm doing with a can of 2400, but I thought I'd use it up, but I guess I'll find something else to use it in. Is it my imagination...or does 2400 generate more recoil?

If used properly in loads it is intended for it would be your imagination. You can generally always get more velocity with W296/H110 so they should have more recoil. Now if you're using 2400 improperly pressures and thus velocity could be higher so then yeah more recoil.

Use the 2400 with lighter bullets and it will do fine. I like it and use a lot but generally not with the heavier for caliber bullets where I feel the twins are better.

Thanks!  I just went diggin' through all my junk and found a big bag of 240gr HP's I bought a few years back, so I can burn some of the 2400 up with them.

One of my favorite loads is 17.5 grains of 2400 with most any 240 grain bullet. I used to use it with my cast bullets from Lyman 429244 GC mould in competition and won a lot of trophies and some cash using that load. It's mild and accurate. It's well below max so you might want more with the 240 JHPs but if for pleasure shooting not hunting then maybe not.

I've never fired a bullet that weight in my .44 mag but I would consider 4227.
