I started callin coyotes in the late 60s early 1970, and I used an old Johnny Stewart caller that used a 45rpm record. Whew! Was that thing heavy. Then I went to the tape cassette on batteries, after I recorded the 45rpm. Better, but far from perfect. Then I started playing with mouth calls, but messed some with the now new electronic calls they were selling.
Then I decided to hell with it, I gonna learn to blow calls. That was probably in the early 80s. I never looked back, and when the howling started I jumped on that too.
I had rather call coyotes than hunt anything else but, no one around here does, so it's a loner proposition, and I have learned to hunt mostly alone. No one else wants to put the effort into it to do it right. When I shot an adult coyote while laying in the middle of a 400 acre winter wheat field (wheat about 6"s tall) at a range of 7', folks couldn't believe it.
There is nothing like watchin a coyote or bobcat come "to you" rather than "away from you". It's a hoot like no other, and makes all other hunting seem rather bland.

Dee,

Me and Pop got fairly good at varmint calling, and enjoyed it, until a big bobcat jumped in the bed of the truck with us.  No real danger, but when it's pitch black and you ain't expectin' it, it will get the juices flowing!

I'll bet! I used to go to the golf coarse at night when I was still working the streets as a Sgt. There was a vixen gray fox out there that raised a litter there every year for 2 or three years. I would call her up with a piece of cellophane, and feed her a pimento cheese sandwich a piece at a time right out of the patrol car window. When her pups got old enough she would bring them with her. It was a hoot to watch those eyes come bouncing in.
I showed her once to a patrolman one night, and never saw her again. He was a part time trapper, and I suspect she went to fur shed.
After that, I kept natures little pleasures to myself when I found them.

I hear you. I like to go calling than any other thing. As far as howling I do that with out calls. And have been howling for years now. I still think mouth calls are more fun than elec. It just something to get one coming in to you doing the calling. I've had them come in and hit the truck man what a rush. I too hunt mostly a lone. Most people don't want to be out late or in the cold for hours at a time.

I've called little grays up sitting in the Jeep with the door open, and the interior light on. They would rare up and look in sniffin. You can run'em off and then call'em back sometimes. Their a sucker for a free meal.

I think he was a two leged predator hunter.
