resized brass in .35 Whelen
« on: November 30, 2009, 11:48:13 AM »
I've got one of the new .35 Whelen handi's that were made available here in Ms.  There have been a lot of reports of these rifles misfiring.  I've been lucky, mine has only misfired twice in about 80 rounds fired.  That's still too much in my opinion.  All of these were handloads and the last misfire was a once fired neck sized case using Remington brass.  I know about necking brass up to .375 and resizing back to .358 a little at a time until it just chambers creating an auxillary shoulder to headspace on for fireforming.  My question is what about using .280 Rem. brass and setting the shoulder back till it chambers with slight resistance.  Wouldn't this accomplish the same thing.  I've got a bunch of .280 brass to use.  Good idea or not.  If not any other suggestions?  I just don't want a misfire when I'm shooting at a deer.

If your 35 Whelen die has a tapered expander that will expand the neck without problem, it should work fine.  Jedman
