Marlin 336 Repair Question

I've got a pre-safety bolt  Marlin 336 that has a lever that likes to pop open...What is the critical part that locks up the lever? I replaced the Button on the lever(and Spring)  but that did not change anything..

   Start by removing the bolt and the lever, and really cleaning the bolt body and lever well, scrubbing off an gunk, large or small.  There is a slot in the underside of the bolt, that the camming end of the lever fits into, and it you have any gunk in that slot, or on the camming end of the lever, it can cause the lever to pop open. 

   Just a thought.

I had the same problem.  My gunsmith fixed it for $64.00.  I know he replaced the spring.
