7x30 takes another one
« on: November 14, 2003, 06:19:39 PM »
:-D gun- tc 7x30- 14in.ss   scope- tasco 4x-
load--  primer- cci large rifle-  powder- 36.5 gr. win 748-  bullet 120 horn. sp. pistol.  OAL--This is toltal lenght 2.855
It started snowing about a half hour before me and son headed for our hunting area. When we arrived at the parking area my brother was not there yet so we waited until about 15 min. before legal shooting time and then decided to go on without him. It was still snowing a wet heavy snow so I told my son I figured we should set in under the cover of the spruce and balsam because I felt the deer would want to take cover there too. I got in my stand around 6:30. My gloves were wet and I was thinking it is going to be a long day with wet hands.
The snow was hanging heavy on the brush and trees and you couldn't see anything outside of shooting lanes or small openings. I had run out of hand warmeres and around 7:45 my fingers were so cold I was starting to lose feeling in them, so I took a look around and bent down to lite my little heater so I could warm my hands and maybe dry my gloves some. Got the heater going and took another look around, nothing. Well as long as I'm moveing around I might as well have a little coffee.I bend down pick up thermos and take cup off and and then take another peak around. There he is in the shooting lane, bend down get rid of thermos and cup, get tc on shooting rail as I peak over again. He is walking strieght away about 50 yrds. out.  Not a good shoot but not bad either, just put it down the back into the lungs. I settle in and take the shot, he is still walking strieght away like nothing has happen, and I'm franticly reloading and telling myself to get it together, that I've been here to meny times to fall apart now. I get reloaded and he is still there, standing in the shooting lane.OK, deep breath and pull it together. He starts down the shooting lane again and I tell myself wait until point x and see if he will give you a better shot, he swings guatering away a couple times but not long enough for the shot. He stops to check the air and look around and then turns broad side and the tc jumps in my hand. He makes that jump that I have seen so meny times when it is a good lung or heart shot. I slump back and let the nerves do their thing.
End of story he will be on my wall in 12 to 16 months.
I hope you all are as blessed as I was. :-D
be safe and god bless

Well written story, you should get paid for that one.  You took us along with you and we got to enjoy the feelings and emotions of the hunt!  That is a gift, and thank you for it.  Yes, congratulations.  Don't know what it is, but the 7x30 just plain works on deer!  And you are using the same load I have used for years!  When I worked up a load, everything shot so good, it was hard to decide on one, but that one came to the top!  My 7x30 has laid in the safe a couple of years now, guess it's time to get it out again and take it hunting!  Congratulations again.    44 Man

i've taken several deer with this cartridge.  Last year I packed up all my belongings and moved to an new furnished home, leaving all my old stuff in storage.  My new home will not be ready before deer season ends, and I can't get to my reloads.  Will factory Federal bullets be OK out to 100 yds?

I tested factory loads in my 12" Hunter and my 14" Custom w/break. They both shot the factory loads into 2" groups at 100 yds. They did shot about 1" higher and 1" to the right of my handloads. I always keep a box in the truck just in case I would happen to forget or loose my reloads.
The factory I have has 120grn bullets by Federal.
