Got a 9qt cast iron dutch oven and a 20 gallon cast iron pot with a stand. Both with lids. I've got $8.00 and an afternoon with a wire brush invested. They are in the fire curing now  8)

Guys,
I've been tempted to look for good Cast like this.  Problem is that you find stuff that has had paint, motor oil etc. in it.
Is is possible to salvage Cast cookware that has been treated this way?  If used won't that stuff keep oozing out of the poors of the metal?

Just asking because I don't want to pass up good deals when I find them.

Put them in a fire and burn them out. Any crud will turn to an ash that you can scour out with a wire brush. I've never thought about oil, but I think this would work for it also.

You can heat to a glowing red with a propane torch, the big kind that runs from a 5 gal bottle made from a 2.5 or 3 inch pipe. Need to find a lead test kit to be safe though.

Cast Iron Cook Ware is cleaned very simply..  Build a wood fire  Oak and Locust wood works the best.  Get a good hot bed of coals.  Put the Pot, Skillet, Exc. in the coals and keep adding wood.  Get Skillet Exc. Glowing RED.  Then take a Oak Block and rub the inside to remove anything that comes out..  Let cool till you can touch with your hand but still warm. DO NOT USE WATER TO COOL! this will crack the cast iron.   Rub down with LARD this will season them. We do this yearly when we butch hogs.   Never Use soap when you wash your cast Iron Cook ware.  Just use Hot water and boil them clean and recoat with Lard.

Search lead test kit, you will find others: http://www.leadinspector.com/?gclid=CKKj1qDdsp4CFQKdnAod3jvqlA

If you use the torch be careful and have no rocks where you lay the cast iron, rocks will explode. As stated, Heat the piece evenly and let it cool slow.

About the lead cooking out, I don't know, that's why the test.

I don't recommend using a torch on cast iron. Having cleaned and rescued a lot of cast iron the only one ever to be cracked was 1 I tried to clean with a torch. Just my .02 cents worth.
