Federal law re possession of unregistered firearms ?

I caught something fleetingly in the news the other day about
someone being charged with possession of unregistered firearms 
and the mention of it being a federal law and not a local like
Chicago or New Jersey  regulation.

Can anyone speak authoritatively about this ?   

I have a couple of heirlooms and gifts of old guns etc and never thought
I was in violation.

I know of local laws requiring registration but never heard of a federal law.

Even full auto are not registered you get a tax stamp to keep.

people in the news just take a story and run with it, heck awhile back some nut (I think it was in missouri) shot 8 people in an alzheimers nursing home

the papers said it was a shotgun.. but I could see the gun in the picture pretty well, so assuming it was the right picture (? you never know ?) they were wrong about the shotgun, it was a 597... that's a remington competitor for the 10/22 market share, I know what they look like because I owned one at the time.

if they published a story about a bunch of people who were so out of it that they just stared into space as a guy got touching distance and shot them with a gun that probably does less damage than a screwdriver stabwound... well, that wouldn't be much of a story... who needs a gun to put people down who are physically and psychologically gone?  anyways the guy went their to kill his ex-wife/live in g/f or whatever she was but she took the night off so he took it out on some patients in that rest home.. look it up

just like in the movies, guns don't recoil or run out of ammo and it's easy to shoot stuff fifty yds away without using the sights, but targets/people get blown to pieces and literally lifted off their feet unless they're V.I.P.'s because those people deflect with their aura and never really die....... if it's guns the media is wrong, count on it

so with all the talk about assault weapons... they really aren't registered?  I thought the atf could come harass class 3 firearms owners... is it the licensee that's checked, not the serial numbers?

I checked into getting one and was told the chief of police or atf could check to make sure you had it and it was stored in a secure location  anytime they wanted . So it would seem when you apply for and buy the stamp someone keeps record .

I'd rather not go through it just to buy a hard to control sawed off (I've tried shooting full length and youth sized shotguns in the same day, can't hit as well with a short one, I can only imagine what a sawed off shotgun is like, and the oh so fun recoil)

and full auto... hey it's our right (though it's severely compromised) but if it's not a machinegun then what's the point?

the only thing I've ever been tempted to get is a "real" m-16 because I'm used to an actual selector switch (instead of on or off)

I have heard of someone in CT. that bought a 50 cal. was told by the local police that they were informed about it.

In Va. they have to OK it before you can buy it

The local chief of police has to approve you getting any full auto or short bbl shot gun or rifle also suppressed guns . I live in a county that the CLEO allows it and approves most request . A county and city next to me will not . So if you want full auto you move to a county that approves you having it . How bad , I know one SWAT officer that works in a county that will not allow him to have a full auto at home so he lives in the same county as i do . That's right his own boss won't allow him to bring home his issue gun if he lives in the county he works in but will allow it since he lives in another county that approves him having it .

Remember that what you heard was on the news. And, they have a tendency to blabber on about something they know nothing about. Makes for better selling of the news if they make the story a much bigger deal than what it really is. Especially about guns!! gypsyman

true gypsyman, but one time I heard something that almost made sense on the news!

scott petersen (the cop that murdered his wife and possibly some ex-wives too, did I get the name right) was catching some kind of crap for having a short barreled rifle after getting out of the police force... and the guy on the news argued with one of his co-workers what the difference was because it was acquired BEFORE he lost his special status that allowed him to have it, that it wasn't a big deal since he hadn't shot anyone with it yet and just part of a witch hunt.... all true, although it's strange that they make that allowance for a MURDERER and not for regular people who want guns and CCW in their states. 

the bill of rights is mostly an affirmation of natural rights, the ones that logical people will follow irregardless- the ones that real low-lives won't even read.  yet the media pushes for regular people to be disarmed all the time.  a guy everyone thinks is a murderer is alright though, because he used to be a cop or because attacking law enforcement destroys the creditibility of law enforcement

Nah, Scott Peterson was the California guy who murdered his pregnant wife.  The guy you're thinking of is Drew Peterson.
