old trick when bear hunting
« on: February 10, 2005, 06:57:20 AM »
When bear hunting take some liquid honey with you and a  small portable stove.  Boil the honey in a dish ...and if it is not too windy the aroma will travel out  a long ways and some sharp nosed bear will follow the aroma right to your position.  These bears cannot resist the smell of honey! :D

When your making your bait sets, pour used cooking grease over the bait.  A coon or skunk that gets into the bait will leave a scent trail right back to your bait.  Any bear crossing this will find your bait quiker.  -Ian

1 gallon jugs of imitation maple syrup can usually be bought very cheap.  It has a stronger smell than honey.  Fill a quart spray bottle 1/2, add about 1 tsp Liquid Smoke.  Spray this all over your bait area, on the trees and leaves, and all over the ground that you walked on and over your trail out.  Do not be quiet about it....Bring everything into site in 5 gallon buckets, let the empty buckets bang and clank into your boots on the way out so the bear can hear your progress off into the distance on the way out.  If you vehichle is close....start it up and leave.  Park 1/4 mile and walk quietly back in to your blind...If the bear was within earshot..you wont have long to wait.
....make it count

Note: Only do this where you are allowed by law to hunt over bait. Game wardens can smell that from a long ways off also.

I usually just cover myself in cooking grease and run around making rabbit noises.   I usually have my gun within reach.

Peas work even better than syrup or honey.  Take a can of sweet peas out with you.  Open the can and dribble a water trail behind you all the way to your stand.  When you get to your stand, spread the peas all over the ground around you.  The bear will smell them and come looking.  When the bear goes to take a pea, shoot 'em.  If you miss, you better run....but don't leave a water trail behind you this time....:)

I thought this one was only for polar bears?

You know...

You cut a hole in the ice, and put peas all around the hole.  When that polar bear comes to take a pea, you kick him in the icehole!!
