ballistics on muzzel loader

I am looking for some information on the drop of a certain grain bullet in  a muzzel loader.  I hunt in Ohio where it is illegal to use a rifle so the next best thing is a encore muzzel loader.  Problem is a hunt a very  very large field where i can take 200 yard shots on a deer.  I have the opportunity to do this sitting down and off a rest using a sand bag.


I have been shooting a 100 grns of powder in my muzzel loader with a 250 grn Hornady SST bullet.  I get great accuracy out of this.  To much drop though.  I have it sighted in at 3" inches high at a 100 yards and it hits 17 low at 200.  I am thinking about going to 150 grains of triple 7.


Does anyone have an idea of the drop on this.

Look at Barnes. They have some great charts for different loader bullets, powder and loads.

The best way is to shoot it at the ranges you think you are going to shoot.

Ballistic charts are fun to look at, but don’t apply them for real shooting situations.

Are you using loose powder or pellets?? I shoot 125gr. of loose 777 with an sst sighted 3" high at 100 yds and only have 5" drop at 200 yds!!! Loose powder has a bit more umf than pellets!!! I DON'T recommend 150 gr. of loose 777!!! 130 gr. of loose 777 is equal to 150 gr. of pyrodex or 3 pellets of pyrodex or 777 pellets!!! My neighbor shot 150 gr. of loose 777 and it shot really bad and I told him it was a really bad idea!!! He dropped to 125 gr. and it shoots really well!!! I shoot an encore too and 125 gr. shoots about 1.25" at 100 yds!!!!

Try Blackhorn 209.
110 grs will easily take a 200 gr shockwave to 200yds.
3-4 inches high at 100 will be on at 200 and 6-7 inches low 250 yards

From whats been tried by others 120g of loose 777 is about the same as 150 in pellets. It is also recomended not to go higher than that. For some reason you bullet is really dropping fast. With that 3"high 100yd 0. I would go to less at 100 and up the speed. My encore likes it hot. 3 pellets gives me a great group and closer to the 2100 they say you should get. What you need to do is run it a crossed a crono and check the speed, then look at a ballistic program. They have one on hornady's website. Plug in your data and then you can see what you have. leupold ballistic plex scope for muzzleloaders.  I put one on my encore and shoot 100 grains of blackhorn 209 pushing a 245 grain powerbelt.  Zero at a hundred yards.  Using the 200 yard crosshair I nailed a ten point at 210 yards this year( I have a range finder), 80 yards further than anything I have tried before hunting.  I hit him square in the center of his chest broadside exactly where I was aiming.  I had an excellent rest on a tree branch.  I was walking out the woods a little early as I had to meet some guys for supper.  The buck was standing 30 yards from my truck eating clover in an open field.  He ran ten steps closer to my truck and collapsed.  Was dead by the time I walked over to him.  I like the ballistic plex scopes.  Good for dummies like me.

     Prebanpaul, My Encore is sighted in 2" high at 100yd and hits about 2.25" low at 200yd.  It hits .5" high to dead on at 150yd.  I'm shootin' 110gr loose 777 under 195gr Dead Center Duplex bullets by Precision Rifle.  Been using it about 6 seasons with 8-10 kills with nothing but outstanding bullet performance.  This is the most accurate and flattest shooting muzzle loading bullet that I have found, by far!!
