DevconŽ Plastic Steel Epoxy to glass bed?????
« on: December 02, 2009, 01:50:40 PM »
I need to glass bed a tang on my flint lock I like to use the Micro-bed 2 part epoxy but I am out of it and to my knowledge it is no longer made.I was thinking in some J@B weld but did read about the above Devcon plastic steel
I like to ask any one try it and what are the pro or cons about it .I thought about brownells glass but I need a little amount.I like to take up the space on the tang were it meets the stock to prevent heavy charges in cracking the stock

Most any of the instant or 10 minute epoxies will work for small bedding or repair jobs. It's much more convenient than mixing up some Acraglas.

I used JB Weld to bed some revolver grips just a few weeks ago.  Apparently did not use enough release compound (I used Breakfree CLP) and half the danged grip stuck to the revolver frame!!

Let that be a lesson to you: use enough release agent and enough of it to make sure you can get the metal away from the wood when it cures!

I will usd a light grease next time, or some of that filmy blue plastic liquid stuff that comes in the Acraglas kit.

The Devcon works very well. It is more of a putty and doesn't flow all over the place. I know a guy who is an expert in bedding rifles and that's what he uses. he recommended I use it and I think it's a superior bedding compound.

I use Epoxy Putty made by "Oatey". Home Depot has it in the plumbing section. Been using it for years. Never had a problem!! Comes in a round clear tube. Very easy to use!!

AcraGlass gel is a 50-50 mix which is fairly easy to mix and I usually use a bit of aluminum powder to improve even it's shock resistance. The devcon glues I use are really great but I've no experience with steel putty.. The glues tend to be a bit too brittle for high shock loads, in my opinion..

I use Minwax as a release agent and it works great. You can apply it without making a mess all over the place.

Lonewolf,  You might want to do some good research before you glass bed the end of the tang. I think that a gap is purposly left there to prevent splitting the stock.
