« on: December 04, 2009, 01:31:14 PM »
lots of side to side movement between barrel and action (empty chamber) foremarm off, with case in chamber everything seems fine. Case protudes form chamber the width of the rim. As you can tell, I'm no gun smith. But, this does not seem right. What do ya think? This gun will be used by grandson and wife
I do not want any issues with saftey.

Welcome! That won't work, it needs to be fitted right, if it's a factory fitted barrel it needs to go back to H&R for replacement of the barrel, the last three digits of the frame serial number will be etched on the left side of the underlug if it was factory fitted. If it's not factory fitted and you confirm it's an SB2 frame(FAQs), you can fit it yourself if you're the do it yourself type(FAQs again).

Thanks guys, I may have miss spoke, the empty case is flush with barrel and action is tight when closed.
The problem is empty chamber and no forearm /side to side movement when closed. (Empty chamber)
looking through scope @ 25 ft. crosshairs move 4 to 6 inches side to side. I don't understand why the
case would make a difference, Is this correct, when loaded action is tight and unloaded loose.

I called H&R today, the person I talked to was not very helpfull, said send back to factory. I thought I'd,
give ya try. I hate to mail stuff! This is a new gun, bought 11-26-09, I know this is a cheap gun, but come on,
the fit is terrible. 280 shot up a wild goat's a$$. And they call this a youth gun, it must weigh 10#'s, I did
not realize the wt. until I handed over to my grandson and he like to have droped it. I can live with the wt., but not the fit. Once again, thanks for the help.

you did the right thing....
it should not take too long for the repair/replacement barrel.
tim probably can give you a educated guess of time.

Now that I've vented, I have not bought a firearm in over 30 years,  last ( colt diamondback 38 and win.
9422). I can not believe the poor quality metal and fit. I have been out of touch I guess.
Like they say, you get what you pay for, that colt was $165 in the early 80's, the win. was $105 in early the 70's. (by the way that was a weeks pay back then)
I need to backup and look again at what you get for $300. No slam on H&R. I might need to look in another
direction. I needed a filler for grand kids and wife and knock around fun gun and thought this might be the one. That said, I will send rifle back to H&R for repair and hope I get it back. I know it's going to weigh less
and shoot straight too.

MGM...

Sorry the rifle you bought seems to have issues.

As far as a "value" these handi's are hard to beat! I bought my first, (a 20ga H&R) at 14yo in 1974. I shot thousands of shells thru that barrel shooting everything from trophy grasshoppers to pterodactyls to my first deer. Run down to your local WallyWorld and check out one the youth models. You will be surprised at the weight and balance to these little gems. The kids or the wife don't look at the rifle the same as you and I do....they only see a rifle and all the potential fun that it will afford them! Take 'em to the range and let them burn-up as many shells as they want to as often as they want to and you will have them hooked for life.

I had a barrel that was like that, it wiggled a bit when the action was closed on an empty chamber but was tight when there was a roound in it. It shot just fine.  If the action is open it is common for a bit of side to side play, especially the way I like to bed the forearm.
