Equipment bigamy
« on: December 04, 2009, 03:21:52 AM »
I'm naturally one of those boring monogamous types, at least when it comes to my wife. And previously with girl friends.

But with equipment it's a bit different. With cars, I only have one at a time because two would be too distracting and expensive. (Probably the same reason I'm monogamous with women.  ;) )

But with fun things I like to use a lot, like target pistols and guitars, I've got more than I need. I've got three good target .22s two good target .45s and two good guitars. In each of these classes of equipment, I use one, and the others sit largely unused, sort of as a backup. The reason I have multiples is because when I started I tried a couple of different models of each to decide which I liked best. One got picked. The other is unused.

Some like new equipment. Some like good equipment that lasts and eventually wears out through honest use. I'm in the latter category.

First thought is---don't let 'em sit around.
Second thought is--if you just want one of each sell what you don't want.
I have catagories for what I want and what I get.
Now this is guns and golf clubs---I can't play a guitar.
In Guns I have catagories of calibers and formats. I admit that I have several in .45's but that is because I wanted different makes--I won't sell any.
I have several in different calibers of the same caliber---but I like it that way and they all get used.
I don't sell golf clubs---they just find a place in the closet until the lesson is learned---well, that is for drivers, putters and wedges. I am putting right now with an old 1952 Bristol, George Low 600.
I have golf clubs I purchased back too the 60's.
I guess I am a collerctor of sorts but --except for the golf clubs--they all get used.
Blessings

Well, I should have been a bit more honest about the "sitting around" part. They actually do get used, but not nearly as much as the main ones. The problem with selling them is that I just won't. These thing have appreciated significantly in value. For example, one of the .22s is a Smith and Wesson model 41, a good gun for sure, but it's worth three times what I paid for it. The 45s are about half again what I paid for them. So there's actually a kind of investment value in having them.

It's also fun just to take them out and fondle them sometimes.

I can understand the passion for good golf equipment too. A great game for sure. I just can only do so much. If I could do more, I'd probably play golf. My son plays golf and we've been to some golf shows and shops. There's a lot of fascinating gear there. One thing I like about golf, like any good hobby, is that you don't need to spend a lot to get decent functional equipment, but if you want really good equipment, it's available.  Although I'm not a player, my favorite athlete of all time is Jack Nicklaus.  That man dominated the sport for 40 years. I don't think anybody else has ever dominated any sport for that long. He's an amazing man. I appreciate the skill of Tiger Woods, but it's that combination of time and skill that's makes Nicklaus unique.

we need to get together i have a closet full of guns, that i don't use near as
much as i used to. I have enough golf clubs in the garage to start a shop.
I have 3 complete sets (irons & woods) all with their own bags, 3 extra bags
to hold the 20-30 odd drivers, putters, wedges. I found a wedge last nite
that i was think about buy a new one. Well now won't be buying one. ;D
I have been told that some day when i was off hunting SHE was going to have
a garage sale, I told her i knew she was smarter than that. ;D
