1895 Does the Job

I harvested my first deer with my 45-70 this past weekend. I must say, I have never had a deer hit the ground as hard and quick, as it did with this round. I have used a 7mag for over 20 years and just changed over to the 45-70 this year. Even with the 7mag, I never had a deer drop like it did with the 45-70. To me is just goes to show that you don't need a bullet doing 3100fps to stop a deer in it's tracks. I was using the 300gr. Rem. HP at 1800 fps. This bullet, with my powder load, holds under 1-1/2" at 100.

Now, if I can just find those hogs that are rooting up my bermuda grass fields, life will be good. :)

HL, thats why I like mine. They dont go very far and I have yet to lose any meat. Never had to track one yet either. ;)

matter of fact, I just nailed 3 hogs this past Friday. Two wormy sows that will feed the buzzards and a third that I found that someone had used a light gun on and wounded. I just put her out of her misery. I was unable to get any of the piglets, but each of the sows had approx. 12-15 piglets, weaned, with them.

You bet!  My 45/70 will place several of those 300s in the same hole at 50 yards and that large chunk of lead flying at around 1800fps really drops the deer if you do your part.  Every year I keep thinking I will take another gun to the woods but after pre season sessions at the range as often as not the 1895 goes with me.

Congratulations on your deer with the Marlin. I also don't think you need a super mag to take deer. There is something about a lever action .45-70 that just seems right.
