Show me a 357 mag and a max!
« on: December 04, 2009, 03:45:16 PM »
I would so like to see a picture of those cartridges next to one another. I cant find one(max) around here and would like to see the difference.

I found a 357 Mag die set, but where do you find a 357 Max die set for RCBS?
Found some brass by Remington in Cabelas....

I've read you can continue to shoot the 38specials and 357 Mag rounds after the conversion, but does the accuracy of the Mag and specials worsen after the conversion?

And, any off the shelf 357Max ammo?

I didn't keep my 357 max very long, but when I loaded for it, I just re-adjusted my magnum dies. Seemed to work OK for me.

Not at all.  That was my biggest worry when I had only one .357 Handi.  It is a shooter.  When I got the second, and it shot as well, I figured, what the heck, risk it.  I reamed it to max and never looked back.  It shoots all of them just fine.  Don't ask me why the specials can jump that far to the rifleing and still work, cause I don't know.  All I can tell ya is they do.

Pete,  Are you shooting cast or jacketed bullets?  My 357 handi with cast 38sp loads leads pretty badly at the throat. I blame that on the long jump. I would think that a max would be worse. I am thinking hard about reaming to max, but don't have any need for it, just the added versitility.

I shoot mostly LRNs in .38s and SJSPs in .357 and Max.  Have not had a leading problem.  They all shoot fine.  Don't be too much of a "tidy bowl"  your rifle will work fine a little cruddy.....perhaps better than slick.  The max is the "go to" gun.  A max in the chamber, 3 maxis, 3 mags and 3 .38s in the buttstock holder.  Good to go for anything from red squirrels to black bear.

Good shooting,

Pete

Top 357Max loads are close to factory 35 Rem loads, but the 35 Rem loaded to comparable pressures in an H&R will exceed the 357Max by a good margin.  ;)

Nothing wrong with a factory 35 Rem, but I need another deer gun like I need a hole in the head.

Pete,  I have noticed that the gun is still shooting pretty good even when the first 2" of barrel looks really bad.

I get 2000fps with a 180 grain hard cast, you can do more but that's all I want outta cast. I shot some hot 148 gr win silver tips and those things chronoed at 2700fps. They really waste a watermelon. :o

BTW it shoot .38s and .357 very well also.

Found some brass by Remington in Cabelas....

My RCBS dies are labeled as 38special/357Mag/357Max, they are the gray box dies (not the green), if I remember right, that is the carbide die set.

In my Maxi, shooting 180 Hornady SSP slugs, and AA1680 powder I am getting a chronographed 2100+ fps.

This is a "book" load, actually less then max!!

YUP QUALITY 357 MAG DIES WILL WORK JUST FINE.

You guys have a plethora of info on the 357 max.  I like the looks of it and it may do well here in the woods of East Texas. I may have to make that a spring project!

I have a box of 38 long colt. Looks like they could shoot in the 357 too?
