Marlin model 49 .22?
« on: January 18, 2010, 09:12:51 PM »
Anyone know anything about these?  I have acquired one thats stamped "Revelation"  Western Auto that will shoot lights out in spite of it being well worn (abused?).  Gotta do something about the aluminum receiver, barrels not in too bad shape, wood I refinished to at least a respectable degree.  I do know my Ruger feels like a 2x4 in my hands by comparison, its a very sleek rifle.

I bought a Revelation 150 (Marlin 49) to restore at a gun show a few years back.

I used Brownells Aluma Hyde II on the aluminum.  It worked very nicely.  I've used Aluma Hyde II several times with nice results.  It is available in a variety of colors, is very durable and resistant to oils and solvents.  It does go on thick, so the user should be a careful when spraying an area where parts need to fit tightly.  Not much is needed to provide a good finish.

I'll dig up some pictures and post them, after I get home.

Thanks for the reply!   I did try the Aluma-Hyde on it, did a half-!@# job, now its peeling.  Guess I'll need to sand blast the receiver and front sight band when warm weather gets here and try it again.  I sanded the stock really well, placed both pieces in an oven at 200, seems the wood has some sort of wax or whatever, the stain wouldn't take in places.  It came out a sort of mottled finish that after sealing with clear poly turned out to be quite nice in spite of my ham handed attempt.  I hadn't planned on keeping this 22 until I shot it, now its going nowhere.

There are two types of Aluma Hyde.  One requires a primer coat before application.  I attached a link below.

With regards to Aluma Hyde II, Brownells' instruction say to heat the part to be sprayed. I go a step further and clean the part very well using a strong dish detergent such as Dawn Oxy Clean under hot spigot water.  I wear rubber gloves to withstand the water, but also so I do not touch the metal after it is cleaned.  I thoroughly dry it with clean paper towels then heat it with a hand held hairdryer before applying the finish.

Your stock could have been holding years of oil and dirt.  Over time both will absorb deeply into the wood.

The pictures will be pending a day or so.  We're working doubles until Thursday.

Thanks for the link..  And no, I didn't use the primer, somehow missed it.  I'll order some and try that.

Here are the pictures:

The stock was refinshed using Behlens medium brown mahogany stain with a few coats of Tru Oil.

Same rifle as mine.  How does your shoot?  Mine has yet to stutter and it puts my Ruger 10-22 to shame in the accuracy department.
