Winchester M70 Bolt
« on: December 06, 2009, 05:10:17 AM »
I have a new style M70 with the "swaged" bolt sleeve/handle assembly. I read in "Rifle" magazine that the swaged bolt has been loosening. They reccomend having a gunsmith either tac weld or "sweat" the sleeve in place.

Does any one know who have done the repairs? I went to several local gunsmiths and they did not want to go near it. I gave them a copy of the article also.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you, JGrass :)

I think if it were mine, I would just use it and if it ever loosened up I'd let the factory fix it.

I had my Model 70 Classic 338 and my CZ #3 both welded by Craig at Downrange gunsmithing in Sheridan Wyoming.   just shipped the bolt to him and got 'em back in a couple of weeks..   call directory assistance and they'll have the phone #... HTH   Les

It's a fairly simple fix but I'm also loath to fix something thats not broken. Still if the rifle is going to be used on a trip that may involve travel and large amounts of money a good smith should have no trouble with this fix. V-out the joint slightly and weld with a heatsink to help with cooling. The entire sircumference needn't be welded, just enough to lock the sleeve on..
