.222 Rem and 55 Gr Hornady SP with H4198
« on: December 07, 2009, 12:33:17 AM »
Just though I would share this:-

Shot at 75Metres (82 yards) from a rest with my 1956 BSA hunter  ;D load is 19.0 grains H4198 in Lapua case with CCI primer and a COL of 2.100" 5 Shots with a tricky varible wind and a low sun in front. The "flyer" could be me or it might be the load more testing is required to determine  ;) it's a hard life  ;D

My Bushmaster Shorty has shot .780 groups (3 shot) at 100 yds with Winchester 55 gr FMJ bulk bullets over 20grs of H4198.
H4198 is not a commonly used powder in the 5.56. I just got a deal a few years ago on a few pounds and thought I'd give it a try. Surprise!

I never tried H 4198 in my 222 Remington 700 (1 - 14" twist). I did try IMR 4198 and I did not like the results. IMR was kind of the gold standard for the 222. At the time I using a powder meter and the IMR was just awful metering out of it. I ended up shooting a 50 grain Super explosive over 24.5 grains of BL C2 and a Remington 7 1/2 primer. It shot very well indeed - 1 hole groups at 100 yards). It only goes to show you that different rifles like different loads.

I have tried a load using BLC-2 and yes it shot quite well. However for now I will continue working with the 4198 and I fact I am just about to load another 30 handloads as I have to re-zero the rifle after changing the scope mounts to the correct one as it had some Weaver type B-Square rings on it and they don't fit the dovetails properly.

We can work more later with the BLC-2 but first I want to get this very promising load right then should the BLC-2 not work out as well at least we have a good load already to fall back on.

You might give the powder called H-322 a try at the bench, also I have used Winchester 748 and H335. I used to have an old Remmy model 722 and it was in the Triple Deuce also, it would stack bullet holes on top one another at 100 yards 24/7. I now have a little CZ-model 527 and it too will shoot nice little holes under 1/2 inch any day of the week. I don't even load using Hornady factory 50 grn. V-MAX bullets.  ;D
