Primos hot dog
« on: December 02, 2009, 06:57:06 AM »
I've been trying to learn how to call yotes with this call by watching the video and the directions on the box.  When I try to blow the deeper howl sounds(far down on the mouthpiece) I swear it sounds more like an elk.  Anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

I don't have this call, but a Johnny Stewart Howler and I pretty much sound the same as what you discribe with it.

ranger300rum, Welcome to Graybeard Outdoors!

I have one (new in box) but have not messed with it much as I still use my old Bill Austin Howlers. I did have it out long enough to try a few barks and howls along with the distress and it seems to be in the ballpark.

Keep listening to that CD & practicing with that call. Sounds like you are using the right area of the reed but may need a little more/less pressure along with finding that sweet spot.

I think that one could almost compare the open reed caller to an Instrument such as the clarinet or sax...practice will make perfect.

Thanks for the advice.  I haven't blown it too much in that position because I thought something might be wrong with it.  Sounds good farther up the mouthpiece though.  Sounds like I just need some more practice for the deeper howls.  I'll keep on truckin' with it and hopefully post a pic of my first yote soon.

Ahh yes, you'd be amazed at the elk calling you can do with a coyote call, and that is no lie.

You can also look at Zinks calls, their rabbit calls are basically an insert of one of their duck calls, take the barrel off your duck call, use that like an open reed distress call and you'll see what I'm talking about.  Even their howler looks like it is based off the insert of a goose call, especially since it appears to use their goose call guts.

A little ingenuity/creative thought makes a call for one creature into a call for another into a call for another etc...

I am surprised that you are getting elk like sounds while trying to produce the deeper howls though, if I want to create an elk sound on my howlers I pinch the very tip of the reed and slide up, for deeper howls I am doing the reverse.
