Postcard Match
« on: March 10, 2010, 10:33:14 AM »
Has anybody ever done postcard matches, otherwise known as Postal Shoots? Someone designates the rifles allowed, the kind of sights and the yardage. Then you use a 3x5in postcard size target, with only an x on it for sighting. You can have different catagories. You mail in your best group, and have the winners announced, for bragging rights or a gift. Is there any interest in doing this?

There was one a few years ago that was based out of either England Or Germany . The target was online and shooting clubs all over the world had shoots . The best target from each club was sent in . Can't remember much more but you may find it online . At our club people shot on a certian day . It may have been on a certian day all over . 22 RF was used .
You planning on getting one started ?

I would love to start one, but it would need to be a basic one, where folks would be on the honor system to shoot either a three or five shot group on a 3x5 inch card, then mail their best group in. Say like 30-30 lever action, 22rf, 44-45cal levers or single shots, catagories like that. Maybe an open sight catagory at 50yds, and a 4x scope catagory at 100 or 200yds. I'm open to suggestions if there's enough interest.

Was thinking it would be a good way to get outside this spring, and sight in those rimfires and centerfires.

If i remember an officer of the club had to sign as a witness . Wonder if the targets could be scanned in and show enough ? I like the 30-30 idea but Dee might win .

I think an honor match would be a fine idea in the spirit of GBO, over a month period. Scan and post on a thread or mail them to someone who can if you can't. Just name the categories and go for it. Great idea!

The NEF/H&R Centerfire Forum used to run such a match regularly. I've not seen a post about it there in a good long while tho so I assume they stopped.

They used to do them regularly at surplusrifle.com.  If they gave away prizes, they would draw a name from all eligible entrants so that the temptation to cheat is less.  The winner would get a certificate that says they were the winner of the contest.  I would be interested with milsurps, single shots, handguns, black powder, air rifles, cast bullets, etc.  Any excuse to put more lead down range.

Yup I think that's why they don't still do it on the H&R Forums.  :o

I do a lot more talking about it than shooting or hunting these days. Maybe when the weather warms so will the interest but it seems to me that these post card matches just don't seem to hold much interest with members here.

Well I can understand in fact. Half of range shooting experience is camaraderie with others at the range.
So long distance isn't as much fun I would guess.

Some of the country is just melting out of feet of snow.

Also I don't normally check this section of the forum.  I only replied because I saw it in the recent posts section at the bottom.

When my best friend and shooting partner died it sure put a crimp in my shooting. Back then we shot many thousands of rounds a year together. I suspect that since his death I've fired fewer rounds total than we'd fire in a single year and that was a bunch of years ago. Just ain't much fun shooting alone.

No doubt about that at all.
