Noticed something odd today...
« on: December 07, 2009, 04:12:03 PM »
Cleaned up the bore on my .45 Colt "Classic Carbine".  This bugger has left hand twist rifling!  Had to take a look at my .45-70, .204 Ruger, and .500 S&W barrels, and they're all right hand twist.
What's up with this?  Any other calibers with this setup, and any notion why?
TIA.....

Colts rifles their guns backwards because they are Colts I guess. Almost everyone else rifles the other way. If I remember there is come sort of real esoteric reason to rifle right handed, having to do with the rotation of the earth or something, but I doubt if they shoot any better than Colts.

A left hand twist will tend to unscrew a barrel that is threaded into a receiver.  The British 303 barrels I use for the 32-20 Handi barrels are left hand twist also.  Larry

I seem to recall that the Brits standardized on LH twist decades ago.  If you notice, the US Model 1917 "Enfields" have LH twist, the reason is that Remington and Winchester first started building the Pattern 14 to Brit specs, set their rifling machines up to match that spec, and didn't bother to go with the 1-10 RH twist that was standard in the 1903 rifles, as an expedient to keep the production lines rolling and put rifles in the Doughboys' hands...
Colts, too, use LH.
Nothing important, I suppose, just seemed odd to see a LH twist barrel from a manufacturer who's obviously been producing RH twist for a long time.
Maybe it WOULD shoot better on the 'bottom' of the planet, where the toilets flush the 'wrong' direction, eh???  ;)

Now that would depend on whether you're shooting east or west....or is it north or south? ???

No danger of a Lee Enfield barrel ever un-corking itself.
