28ga Brenneke Slugs
« on: January 07, 2011, 03:47:25 PM »
Brenneke is bringing out a 28ga slug for 2011. This is the first factory loaded 28ga slug in a L-O-N-G time. Gualandi listed them in the '80s but I never saw any and Remington did offer them before that ('60s?). Can't think of any current 28ga guns that would be optimum for slugging but might be interesting to install iron sights on a round barrel gun or possibly trying adjustable "turkey" type sights on a ribbed barrel.

not really any use for it around me,  only time your suppose to use slugs is deer season, and the minimum is .20ga.

20ga is the minimum here N.Y. but I know there are states where you can use 410 slugs. 28ga would be a good alternative for a small kid or someone who is recoil sensitive.

Yep I do as well, for bird hunting, trap,  ect, I wouldn't have a problem giving one to my little brother or my kids in the future,  but how many places can you legally hunt anything with 28g slugs, is what I'm getting at.

It would seem you could hunt any small game with a 28ga especially if a 410 is leagal. I don't bealeive N.Y. has any gauge restrictions for small game hunting.

You are right, but I would think in states where you can use a 410 with slugs to hunt deer you would be able to us a 28ga.

Okay I googled and I found 21 states where yiu can use a 410 or larger to hunt deer. Alabama,Arizona,Arkansas,California,Florida,Idaho,Indiana,Kentucky,
Louisiana,Maine,Massachusetts,Michigan,Minnesota,Missouri,Montana,New hampshire,Ohio,Oregon,Pennsylvania,Tennessee,and Virginia.
New Mexico you can use a 28ga or larger to hunt deer.
I'm not sure how complete this is but 22 states were you can use a 28ga I think would justify ammo makers having a market the brennekes.

If you were small gamenhunting or bird hunting in states where the seasons overlap I believe a few slugs in your pocket might come in handy.

Well I live in NY and I would certainly buy some 28ga slugs when they become available. You can't use them for deer or bear, but you can use them for anything else you can legaly shoot with a rifle. And it is another option for the ladies or recoil sensative for HD.The energy numbers will be quite a bit higher than the .410 slug.

FWIW, IIRC, here in Wisconsin its illegal to even have slugs with you outside of gun deer season(s).
