Firearms Identification
« on: December 08, 2009, 09:02:45 AM »
I was wondering what, if anything, everyone does for identification in case your guns are stolen. I have taken pictures of mine w/serial numbers written on a piece of paper and a short discription. Then I put them on a memory card. I doubt that this will help recover them but if they are recovered it might help get them back with the positive ID.

Make, model, & serial #'s along with a full description and any rare feathers along with the year of MFG if known and a fair price.
They are also insured.
Stored on a disc, a jump drive and a printed copy as well all locked up in a fire proof safe.

I have to admit that I am a little behind on a few with all the Handis I have acquired lately.

my granpa engraved all his guns with his initials on the triggergaurd.i have several of them and treasure them. however its not a method id recommend.i did know another feller who would put a small card with his name and address on it under the buttplate.pretty hard for a criminal to deny that is not a stolen gun when the actual owners name is under the buttplate.

My favorite way of identifying a stolen gun is to match the bullet in the perp's head with the gun on the scene.

I gave Troopers picture, serial number, make, and model.  Mini-14 stolen in 1996.  Last year 2008 the gun was recovered in North Carolina, in a gun shop, ATF was auditing.  I got the gun back.

I recorded Make, model and serial number along with two photos of each gun on a disk and also ran an additional disk and gave it to my son to store in his safe.  He is in the process of doing the saame thing and I will store his back=up information in my safe.  One phote is take of the whole gun, the other is a close up of the serial number.  This can be done with most every digital camera.

I've been lazy about pictures the last year but I do keep my buyer's info.  the receipt that you got upon buying the firearm is a big indicator, also the name of your ffl is good since they have the records too.

add that to the pictures and you're almost set

also questor's idea

I use a gun collectors software. N M guncollector software.
All information is stored, model. make, caliber, serial #, dates purchased and sold, condition, value, also allows pictures to be linked to each record.

I forgot, it allows you to print or save to disk a report5 on all the files. I keep a copy on a disk and another at my parents house.

However you do it, make sure to record the serial numbers of all your guns and good scopes.

All of my guns and scopes are recorded in an Excel document on this computer and on a flash drive in the gun safe.  A flash drive with that document is also in our safe deposit box.  All the receipts that we have for guns are also in that box.
