Does anyone use a rifle in 45/70 in competition ?

Well, sure. I use a 45-70 Handi Rifle for plainsman events. Accuracy isn't all that important as you are shooting only about 50 yds max as part of the stage. So, I shoot it with open sights and still have the ejector operating too.
Now if I was shooting long range, the ejector has to be disabled on a Handi and I would probably put a tang sight on it too.
I also shoot long range lever action with a 336 Marlin cowboy in 38-55 and I have sights installed on it.

howdy howdy :oops: :roll: excuse tha pun please. i'm not understandin sumthin here. why does the ejector have to be disabled--well maybe i'm wrong in my understandin of the gun.

SASS rules no ejectors, just extractors. Same for SXS shotguns.

Yes pards, Flint has it. The SASS rules are that for single shot long range rifle, you are not allowed to have an ejector, but for plainsman side event class you can. I don't know why, just is. Now I am going to disabel my ejector and make it extractor only here pretty soon. That is done with a grinder and I have been given the instructions on how to accomplish this mod by grinding the hump on the shaft of the ejector. No big deal and since I am no speed demon shooting the plainsman event anyway, I figure I can use the same rifle to shoot the closer long range targets, like 200 yards.
You can go to the SASS website and they have a rule book on the front page that you can download if you are at all interested.
Did I mention that 45-70 Handi's kick like a mule? Well, they do. I have shot a friends roller and it doesn't kick anywhere like that. Now, here is a strange thing too. I have two barrels for my Handi. I can shoot the thing with my 44 mag barrel with 44 rounds and still be legal for the class as it is a pistol cal if you do not shoot 44 mags but 44 spl or whatever. Funny huh? Well, I don't actually shoot my 44 mag barrel. I just have one for it that was fitted.
I hope this helped. Handi's are entry level at best. I bought mine with the 44 mag barrel used for $100 and then spent another $100 to get the 45-70 barrel installed at the factory. Total $200. Not bad for something I shoot maybe 4 times a year. :grin:

Howdy, shot my 4570 Uberti Hi-wall at Panorama's Northfield Raid as both long range rifle and Plainsman. Loaded with 60 gr Cleanshot for Plainsman, 60 gr 777 for Long Range with a 405 gr bullet. Didn't get the sights right for Long Range, but did fine inPlainsman. Came in 2nd Pistol Cal Lever with my Henry in 44-40. Anyway, the Hi Wall has a heavy enough barrel to absorb the 45-70 fairly well. Better than my Ex Marlin did.

Howdy Flint. It sounds like you had great time at the northfield raid. Nice going.
Yup, my Handi is too light. That is why I only use it for plainsman. I bet the bufflo classic is a lot easier on the shoulder because of the barrel and extra weight.
I use 777 for my 336 cowboy and I cannot believe how accurate it is. I had been shooting 4198 and got a good load going that I use at silhouettes and of course I had tang settings for each of the four distances and I was surprised to find I use the same settings with 777 now. I was amazed and the accuracy is right on. I had an occasion to shoot the lever at 200 yds at western states championships this year off of sticks and got all 5 hits, but my time was slow. I thought El Rod and his ligtning would take it at about 24 seconds with 5 hits, but along came Dogface and beat that. I can't shoot that fast. It takes me too long to get onto target and remeber to squeeze. Lot's of fun though. :-)

For some reason the Cleanshot load shot higher than the 777, both 60 gr by volume. Is it the 777 shoots flatter? Talking 150-250 yards..

777 is a hotter powder than Cleanshotor or any other sub. If you were to reduce the load by 15% it will shoot about the same as the others then

I shoot a Pedersoli Sharps Sihlouette rifle in .45-70. I hand cast Lyman 457124 and 457125 RN Bullest for it (400 gr and 520 gr). It weighs about 11 pounds and shoots MOA at 100-200 yards. It is one of the finest replica arms I have. I have a set of Pedersoli Creedmore LR sights on it , with globe front. If you operate the lever smartly, it neatly kicks the case free from the rifle. I bought mine from Dixie Gun Works for $750.00. I wouldn't think of using anything but Holy Black in this rifle. FFG Goex (64 gr)
