22WMR Sportster: Standard Barrel or Bull Barrel?
« on: December 25, 2009, 04:39:38 PM »
Hello, everyone.

I have a 22LR Sportster and am thinking about sending it to the factory to have a 22WMR barrel fitted. It looks like I can purchase either a standard barrel or a bull barrel in 22WMR. Does anyone have any recommendations with respect to which one I should get? What are the advantages of each? Is the bull barrel more accurate?

Also, will they still bring the trigger down to 3 lbs.?

Thanks,
Kels73

Disregard. I went ahead and ordered the standard barrel. I never knew that 6-8 weeks could seem so long!!  ;)

That's probably a wise decision, the bull barrel 22mag barrel was discontinued a year ago, be sure to ask them to lighten the trigger on the order form, also attach a tag to the trigger guard asking the same so the gunsmith will see it it in case they don't put it on the invoice.

Well I guess there's no need to second guess my decision!  :D  I did notice that the order form said 2008 on it. Perhaps they haven't updated the information on their website yet. Thanks. And thanks for the other comments as well. It is much appreciated!

Well, it's here, and I can't wait to shoot it! That was a pretty good turn-around time. They received the gun on 1/6 and shipped it on 1/19. It looks great. It has no new scratches. The trigger feels nice. And the barrel is micro groovy! They forgot to ship the hammer-spur extension that I ordered, but when I called them to let them know, they said they would ship one ASAP. Interestingly enough, I shipped the gun to the Remington plant in Ilion, NY, and the gun was shipped back to me from the same plant. However, all of the paperwork is for the Madison, NC, plant.

I hope to get out soon to shoot it! I should have some time to do so next week.

Madison is where their corporate offices and customer support are located, be sure to post in the Ilion Satisfaction poll in the FAQs and Help sticky.  ;)

So what are the muzzle diameters of the 22WMR std and bull barrels? Are they different from the CFs?

My 22mag is .591" at the muzzle, don't have a 22mag bull barrel, but the 17hmr and 17M2 both have bulls that are around .800" just like their centerfire cousins.

I just checked mine, an '04 (HU) .22WMR Ultra Varmint that I bought new as a 'bull barrel' model.
It is a heavy tapered barrel that I have always wondered about with a .655 muzzle. It has good barrel weight but I have questioned it being a true bull, though compared to yours, Tim, it does have more so maybe that is what they were back then. No complaint, though, it hangs out there quite nicely.

That's apparently an exception to what "bull" barrels normally are, H&R's 2004 catalog lists the 22mag Ultra Varmint with a 22" bull barrel, same for 2006.  ???

Another 'special collectors version' heh! I ordered it because the literature said bull barrel, and almost passed when inspecting it. It was heavier than a .223 and .243 they had so I figured it was just what they were mis-calling bull (compared to other full dia. to muzzle bull barrels Ive had on other guns).
Note I said 'almost passed', glad I didnt, it has been a fine rifle.

Tim,
My HW(2006?) .22WMR Ultra also measures about .65 at the muzzle.  Clearly smaller than the 17M2 next to it in the rack.

Kinda contradicts all the other "bull" barrels H&R sells, doesn't it! ::) It should more appropriately be called a heavy barrel since it is heavier than the standard 22mag barrel, mine is .592" which is around what Superlights measure.

Sounds like this .650ish is the .22 WMR 'bull' from then unless someones comes up with a larger dia. I guess until then I'll keep calling it that.
