It is no secret that the military has been looking for an ideal sniper weapon for years; one that is silent, no trajectory, and sub-lethal or lethal. Also, experiments with platform mounted large pulse and laser weapons have been fruitful lately. Techies find this kind of research facinating; but will the foot soldier's weapon be replaced in the future with a pulse weapon...?  Here's some interesting things.

"The basic problem with using a laser as a weapon is power. A laser is focused light energy, being sent from the laser to the target in a short burst. Using batteries or generators and capacitors are too heavy for this to be practical. But the right combination of chemicals can provide the needed energy, at least in theory. The solution is a bit more complex. " But the use of chemical HF (hydrogen-flourine) lasers solved the immediate problem, but were deemed too cruel to use.

Now here's a guy that built a handheld prototype blue ray pulse laser weapon for 300 Euros...not a toy and quite impressive so far, uses 9v for sight lazer and 9 AA for power:

and here's his video...cool looking homemade ray gun proto....potentially lethal he says:

and handheld Laser Gun available for experimentation and purchase:

"Oh boy, a Laser Ray Gun is now available for purchase from a company called Information Unlimited. This $1750 handheld shooter comes fully assembled, runs on standard AA batteries, and packs enough focused energy to blast a hole in the "hardest of metals." A set of Alkalines loads about a hundred-fifty 6,000 Watt shots with a 20 to 30 second recharge lag between blasts. Oh sure, they'll tell you that the product is intended as an "advanced science project" after digging into the details, and you'll have to sign the "hazardous equipment affidavit" before purchasing since this is a Class IV (read: highly dangerous)"

and you can get the parts to build one here including a C02 lazer tube:

Many laser type and other Pulse, Energy weapons have been tested by the military for many years. i just watched a story on them some very impressive but not yet practical but the covcepts are prove. who knows maybe they will invent a vaporizer of human flesh without damage to anything else. then send a squad equipped to find and vaporize our enemy?

I have already seen a demonstration of an airplane mounted laser both accurate enough and powerful enough to shoot down other planes or missles. It's mounted in the nose of a 747. It can fly around anywhere as long as it wants by being refueled and can take out other planes or incoming missiles with near 100% accuracy.

Both the US and China have now shown they can shoot down satellites as well. They have the technology already. Making it small enough for a solider to use is a few years away but it can already be mounted in drones that are unmanned and used on the battlefield.

I've seen 50cal BMG bullets that can be programed to explode with shrapnel at a given distance.  This means no fox holes ane safe.  Nor is hiding behind a wall, simply shoot over the wall, and as the bullet passes it will explode sending shrapnel all along the back of the wall.

As for electromagnetic pulse, I've seen where they were close to perfecting it.  Once they do we will not hear about it till the next time they need it, Or they use it and cannot keep that fact hidden.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

the worst is already out there.... biological weapons.  next up is nuclear- ugly and sloppy but grossly overkill and instantaneous.  chemical warfare is fine for terror... so what's the deal with lasers?

it's like worrying about monsters, kids don't know about the child molester down the block that might snatch them off the bike but worry about what's under the bed
