Getting busted
« on: October 13, 2003, 01:12:17 AM »
If I'm in a treestand and a deer smells me before ever comming within sight will he usually back off and start snorting? Or do they just avoid you. Throughout my years I've heard alot of snorting from deer that have either seen me or heard me and are suspicious but not sure. I've been sitting a treestand for a couple of years and have seen only one deer there (a buck which I harvested). The sign there is tremendous, and I'm just wondering if they are smelling me. The wind swirls there but I"ve never heard a single deer snort there letting me know I've been busted.   Any feedback on this? I hunt from 25' - 30' high because of the swirling.  Thanks I'm glad to have found this forum!! :D

when i hunt,
I never dirve in my hunting boots , and only where my hunting close when hunting. When i get out of my truck I will put on my boots then spray them down with scent killer. get what ever i am hunting with then spray it down as well.
I leave my tree stand out for several days before I want to hunt. and when I climb  the tree ( the stand is a climber) I will go about 20-30 feet

The only time i have had deer smell me is when i was about 9 foot off the ground

You should keep all of your clothes in an airtight container until you get out of your vehicle and are ready to hunt.  It certainly helps reduce coffee, tobacco and food oders on your clothes.

If you have a great trail and you are not seeing deer you might use a trail timer on the trail to see when it is being used.  It might be that it is a night trail and not used when you are there.  Some trails are seasonal too.  If a favorite food source ripens they may switch trails until the source is gone.

Remember deer have four things on their minds:  Sex, food, security and escape.  That is why if it were legal for deer to drink the best place to find them would be a bar! :)

Some deer will snort and high tail it when they smell you. Most however sneak out before you ever see them or hear them. If the wind is constantly swirling you need to move to a different area. You don't have a chance there unless you are 30 feet or so above them and even that isn't a guarantee. I have had young deer walk in downwind and never flinch. The older does and bucks total different story. These animals can pick something out in a heartbeat, even with the scent loc suits. Another consideration is the area might be a night travel area. I have set up on trails that were like cow trails, but never see a deer. Follow the trails to see where they are going. Try to set up closer to them so they are coming by you while it is still light enough to see.

frozen is right. Last night I was hunting on a field about 5:40 a little doe came out in the fiels about 150 yards from me. I had the wind blowing in my case I was about 10 feet from the edge of the fiels and 20 feet up in a tree with branches all around me. my set up could havent been nicer. anyway the doe came in the fiels and looked around then looked right at me stright in the eyes. then figured i was ok then walked a little fourther in the field then looked back at me. she did this several times but never did figure out  what i was untill I fired my 209x50 at her and missed  about 30 munits 3 more does cam out from the same trail and walked like i wasnt there  so I took a 200 yard shot and missed the biggest doe. all three ran to the edge of the field and stopped and then walked away with knowing what happened or could care less

Actually....I've never seen that law :?  And if we could find their building that houses the sex, food, and booze, all we'd have to do is get past the guards at the door and we could all have trophy buck ;)
