Why is.358 the only BLR folks want?
« on: January 31, 2010, 10:23:05 AM »
I was looking at Marlins and H&R like I usually do on a Saturday. My local shop has a display case where they keep stuff that people put a deposit on. I usually open it and poke around to see what I missed. Better than spending my own money. Saw a 1975 336 30-30 with a KMart scope and good wood that sold for $315 (or at least got a $20 deposit). I actually saw the kid marched in by his father last Saturday selling it. Guess he forgot to feed the dog or smacked up dad's car. I was going to call last Tuesday to see how much it was selling for, but just never bothered.

Anyhow, I specifically was not buying a gun, but I saw a 2001 Browning BLR Lightning in .270 with a Nikon Buckmaster 3x9 scope and Burris rings/base. Had a couple of light scratches, but overall, close to new, certainly better condition than the Marlin.

Price was $450 OTD. $135 more than a 336????? They had a couple of other BLRs. All $500 .308's. They get .358's, but those sell. This one had a really nice trigger pull, was in better condition, and I like Nikons. Plus I have a lot of .270 components. The gun feels heavy, like a Marlin 1895, so I could see how it does not attract the impulse buyer. Anyhow, it has my name on it now. Potential $200 firing pin replacement and all.

Just scanning Cabela's Gun Library. I do believe that the $350 of optics and mounts within this package puts my deal to shame. More desirable short action too.

Replace the firing pin yourself.  Not rocket science.   Save big money & send half to me.  Hurry.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

Maybe I am missing something, had BLR's all my life w/o problem.  What is the "firing pin issue", and why would any firing pin cost $200.00?  By the way, my 358 win. BLR is one of a few rifles I will never sell.  About as perfect a close / medium range big game rifle as you will find.

Brownell's gets $172 for the firing pin that fits the current BLR's. They seem to break eventually. If you have a 30+ year old BLR, that firing pin is about $15. But of course you pay $150 on Gun Broker for a replacement mag if you can find one. It is a tradeoff.

$116.00 for a plain steel one for the short action - what a bargain... ::) ::)   When I was a young man (not THAT long ago) I bought new rifles for less - Brand new Winchester #94, or Marlin 30-30 lever - $95.00 at Service Merchandise.  That was about 1978 or so.

My blr .358 will be the last gun I sell.  I've taken a lot of game with it.I didn"t realize clips cost so much. I have a blr .22-250 clip that I will sell for 50.00 + postage.

I'd take it if it looked like this. Not sure if selling/buying here is allowed though.

Those you can still buy, so prices are more reasonable.

Wreckhog, he said a mag for a 22-250. The picture of the mag you posted is for a pre-81 browning BLR mag. Browning did not chamber the pre-81 rifles in 22-250. So country boys mag won't look like the picture.  :)
