Anyone ever own a 878
« on: December 06, 2009, 02:00:02 AM »
Back in the eairly seventies I purchased a 12 ga semi auto from Montgomery Wards that was on sale,The shotgun and a case of shells was in the area of a hundred and fifty dollars. That was the first of many cases that this shotgun digested without a flaw for many years. After thousands of rounds I broke the ear off the outside ejector claw.It was obvious that this weapon had been produced by Remington as the replaced ejector was for a Model 1100 and the barrel was the perfect match for a 870 with the exception of gas ports being drilled in the area of the barrel ring.I was told by the gunsmith that supplied the ejector that the 878 was a model that was in competition for the new automatic that Remington later selected as the Model 1100.I lost that weapon in a house fire yet many memories remain of its days in the field.

Biggest racked deer I ever killed was with an 878 back in 1972. That shotgun ate everything I put in it without any problems. Don't remember what became of it.
When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die the world cries and you rejoice.

Also got mine in the early 70s, still have it & use it. A few yr. ago I had it opened to take steel shot. They seen to be indestructible. I fell in the mud during a trip to the salt pond and filled the barrel with mud, took if off  cleaned it out with a stick, flushed some water through it and carried on shooting. When I got home I gave it a shower with G96. It may not be the fanciest thing on the marsh put it sure works and that all that counts.
