357Max useful range?
« on: December 21, 2009, 01:47:45 PM »
I shoot a 357 max and have shot deer approx 130 yards easily.  I would still think after what I have read its good for 200 yards with a 15 inch barrel.  I would think the mag would be at least no less than the 150 or slightly farther with the right load data.  I can tell you one thing I love my 357 max.  If you have never shot one you must try it. They are a fun shooter.

Has anyone ever heard of shooting a 35 Remington shell out of a 357 max casing?  A friend of mine heard something and found some load data and is thinking about giving it a shot.

What?  ??? If you mean 35 Rem load data in a 357max case, they're crazy, the Rem has considerably more capacity, 50.8gr vs 32.7gr water.

I put my range report in the sticky for the Maxie reamer, but in short it liked the 180 grain XTP's the best.

I like the 180 gr Hornady ssp the pointed bullet gives a good Bc and the 357 max out of rifle has the as good or better effective range as the 30-30 with flat nose bullet.

I would probably like it too if I could try them.  (Everyone seems to be out of stock).  The 180 XTP's are out of stock at my supplier as well.

How about the Lyman cast bullet 358429 170 grain flat point ? It shows a a BC of .286 - higher than the hornady ssp 180.

And you can make them yourself or order them.

When we shot IMHSA we knocked over 56 lb rams at 200 meters . They went over as fast or faster than the 44 mags we also shot .
We/I loaded 35 cal. rifle bullets in both 357 mag and max. used the 180 loads from Hornady as a start point . These bullets were tuff and held up well on steel targets . For game they might be to tuff to expand in some cases . We shot them in a contender out of a rifle you may do ok .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Ron L. Reiber, in the Nosler 6 guide,  says he dropped a deer at just over 200 yards with a 180 grain Partition out of a Max. (And that was out of a pistol.)

Here are some penetration tests done with the Hornady 180gr SSP from a 35 Rem at 2370fps which is close to what the Max can do.

No doubt you could take a deer at 150-200 yards. But will the same load work at 15 yards or just blow up with no pass through?

I'm sure it would work at 15yds since at 357Max velocities since it seemed to work fine in the test media at 50 feet......unless it hits substantial bone which was CW's reason for liking the 180gr Speer FP a bit better, it's actually a 35Rem bullet.

35 Remington BULLETS out of a 357 Max case, yes!!  I shoot an RCBS 210 Grain cast bullet that was designed for the 35 Rem out of my 10" Contender Barrel @ 1350fps.  I would not be afraid to take on deer out to 200, although I may pump up the speed a little.  My load at 1350 has minimal recoils and knocks over 200 meter rams with authority.  I have some jacketed bullets designed for the 35 Rem, but have never used them.  The cast were just too accurate and are a whole lot cheaper.
