which firearm

i currently do my deer hunting with a hawken and a 30-30 handirifle, and a marlin xs7, -308....a friend wants to buy my xs7, and i would break even on it and the scope.if i sell it, i would replace it with a ultra hunter .308, or a standard handi in .270...this would be for 200-300 yd shots over fields...what would you do..keep what i got, sell, ...and if so, which one would you buy...had some trouble with the xs7 feeding....gunsmith worked on mag spring, its better now...

Get the handi in 270,  should shoot a little flatter than the 308.

remember that while it's not anything but a tool  :o , it is working for you now and that's not guaranteed with anything you may acquire later on


I once had a .300 win mag remington model 700 with a long barrel and synthetic stock..... handy to carry since the weight was spread out over long object, light in the first place even, $400 used for scope and gun together, put overlapping holes in holes in holes hot bore, cold bore, bored from shooting perfect groups bore.... in a rest but when I tried to shoot that thing standing I'd get smacked in the eye if I wasn't careful and it wasn't so great accuracy wise since I was being a wimp and not handling it right.  I got rid of it to fund my next 700, also good gun and not a face abuser but I've never seen a gun that shot as good as that one before it... and I'll always miss it.  best thing I ever got for 400 bucks, especially for a gun.  :'(

You sound like your either not happy with it or just want something different. If that's the case by all means sell it and get what you want.

+1 with ham7777 go with the 308. at the ranges you are talking about it can do anything a 270 can. I picked up a 308 ultra varmint Dick's SG combo with camo stock for $259 and had a $10 off coupon. Put a nikon pro staff 3X9X40 The thing loves shooting rem core lokt 150 gr and I took a 3 point buck with it on halloween at 160 yards. I also here alot of people complain about meat damage with the 270.

When the SHTF, .308's will be more availabe than .270's. ;)

I like the .270, and have had many over the years.

The .308 is my choice these Days.

I agree with lefty dude 308 ammo is widely available. once deer season is over I resight both my 308's in with wolf 150gr. FMJ,12 bucks a box versus 20+ for the remmy and both guns shot the wolf almost if not as well as the remmy.

Fed brown box was $13 at Walmart. Rem green box was $14.50 at Dick's. Minus rebates on both.

.308 is a sissies .300 win mag... that's why I took it up.  easy enough to load, high performance-short action ammo, lots of bullet choices... can use military ammo/components IF you know what you're doing.... and the recoil is easy depending on ammo/loads

not GREAT at anything, but good at most things.  up close it might be overkill on deer- shot one 40yds away last year.... tore up lots of good meat and made a hellacious nasty mess inside (be careful what hp's and softpoints you use).

My creed after not having one and doing the opposite of it is, "Never sell a firearm!"  Even if they didn't seem useful, I needed the cash badly, etc., I should have never sold ANY of the firearms I sold or traded over the years!

That's my recommendation!  Save, pinch pennies, work extra, donate plasma, do whatever it takes to get your next firearm, but don't sell or trade any you currently have!

My .308 wears both optical & Iron sights. Optical: 2X6X28mm compact scope, mounted W/ medium height weaver rings on the Handi/rail. Iron sights: factory order/accessory barrel W/factory installed iron sights.
With the scope removed the rear sight is useable and sighted in W/O removing the scope rail.

Quite a Handi package. ;)

I bought a new 308 handi this year and added a red dot to it.  160 yds it was enough to take down lady elk unless she died of something else after I shot and before she hit the ground.  I was going to try using a lighter load but hunting varmint and hog with a 357 mag lever is just too much fun.  Mayby i will get drawn for elk again next year, after zeroing scope and dropping elk I have eight shells left.  I may even clean it.
