base and rings set up for .22mag Sportster ?
« on: December 15, 2009, 04:19:52 PM »
I feel like a loser asking this , but I'm not real familiar with scopes, bases and rings. I have the .22 mag Sportster that I've been using with open sights and would like to put a scope on it. The variety and number of bases, rings, and manufacturers is overwhelming. Could anyone recommend a basic set up that they have used with good results? I 'd like to put a small, fixed power 4xor6x scope for use out to 50 yds. Any help with model numbers or brands would be great. Thanks for your time, I really appreciate any help.

I prefer Burris rings myself!  Then of course I prefer Burris scopes too, when I can afford them!  I've always had good luck with Burris rings!

I like medium height Millet Angle Loc rings but others here do not. They are fine rings if you know what you are doing and are a bit mechanically inclined. Luepold Rifleman series rings are good and not to expensive, as well as the old standby, Weaver rings. As far as the scope goes the usual thinking is get the best you can afford, I believe an exception to that is for .22 rimfires. For a .22 rimfire, a decent cheap scope is a Simmons 4x32 rimfire scope...if you don't like it you are not out much and you could always sell it here....<><....:)

what about the hammer hitting the scope ? do I need medium rings to avoid this or does that depend on the scope size itself? what are the bases I see on the Sportster rifles in the H&R catalog? Thanks for your responses.

Bases, rings and scopes are pretty well covered in the FAQs and Help sticky.

I mount a 2.5x shotgun scope just ahead of the hammer. Little smaller field of view, but it looks good and requires no hammer extension and has no clearance issues.

I use a Numrich base but the H&R one is fine. It is a cheap .22 so I use whatever low rings are in the junk pile.

That is a great .22 LR and .22 Mag scope for the money. I hope the rings are high enough for you and are not so low that the hammer hits the ocular bell of the scope. I much prefer the standard H&R scope rail because of the numerous cross slots to allow for many varied scope mounting positions. You can always cut or file an additional cross slot in your rail (easy if it is aluminum). Best of luck and let us know how it works out or if you have any problems. They are all solvable and most of us here have had them and have figured out solutions....Merry CHRISTmas....<><....:)
