What's a good efficient caliber in 10" barrel or less for Encore?

Primary use would be coyotes, possibly deer.  I think I'd like something easy to carry (compared to my 15" 7-08) when on scouting hikes etc.  Range would be short to mid 100's probably.  I like the idea of .223 but somewhere read that it needs a lot of barrel to generate any speed.  I know some of you guys must have come up with a better choice for short barrels.

10" ?  Efficient ? How about a .218 Bee for coyotes or any of the T/C U's or .30 Herrett for either coyotes or deer ? Will work in a Contender, not just an Encore.

A 300 Whisper would be hard to beat, although the Encore platform is awfully large...  But if you want a 10" barrel and efficiency, then the Whisper is a proven cartridge on coyote and deer.  Use the 110 V-Maxes on coyote and 125 BTips on deer.  Out to 150 yards it will work great.  Nothing wrong with a 10"  .357 Maximum either....more recoil and blast but plenty of power for your uses.

The .223 works in a 10" barrel, especially with faster powders to reduce blast - but it is too marginal on deer IMO.  I love my .30 Herretts but if I didn't have them I'd use my 300 Whisper....

6MM BR or 7MM BR since you mentioned deer.

 The Herrets were designed around the 10" barrel. I'd start there. A 7br or 7tc/u will be about the same in the Encore BUT the 10" tube is real short for them. A holster from onesoneck or pistol packaging will help with that 15" 7-08. The 7-08 is probably the BEST choice for all the critters you mention and some you didn't!
  According to Rocky Rabb, the 7-30 waters is THE BEST cartridge in a 10" barrel.

If you want something easy to carry then go with a 10" Contender in .30 Herrett. Mine shoots better than I can hold it and has plenty of zap for your intended targets.

I have a Contender, but here is what i have found.
I have a 10" 357 magnum have second thoughts about buying it. 
If i want a pistol of this size, then I would carry my GP100 or S&W 686 with 6" barrel.

The 10" seems to kick more than my 14" 44 Magnum.  The added weight of the longer barrel really helps stabilize the size picture through the scope.

I have also shot a 10" 223 and it does give me a stinging sensation in my hand.  Perhaps it was the powder used, but the muzzle blast was huge.

If you reload, I'd look at the 7TCU. The barrels are common for the Contender, I'm not sure how common in the Encore. The round works well out of a 10" barrel.
