35 Whelen Hog (picture added)
« on: December 13, 2009, 01:13:48 PM »
Went out to the lease this weekend.  Had a madhouse getting out of town soon enough to get there before dark with a 4 1/2 hour drive but we pulled it off. I got there just after 5pm which is when my feeder goes off. A little doe shows up but is acting real spooky and directly a big white boar shows up. He has a few black spots on him. The odd thing is it looks like he is sneaking up on the yearling doe, in fact when the doe takes off he goes into a trot after it but my 35 Whelen is lined up at the front edge of his chest and goes off like it knew what it was doing. The bullet hit just 4 inches up from the bottom of the chest right behind the shoulder. Hog hits high gear and runs down hill for 50 yards or so and thats it for him. The bullet damaged the heart and lungs, he really put some blood out. The exit hole was an inch and a half across. There was just enough light to follow the blood trail right to him before dark. Measuring him he is just an inch shy of 6 feet long from his hams to his nose. Nice cutters too. Tomorrow I am quartering him up but am only putting the ribs and backstraps in the freezer, the rest of him is going to a Mexican friend that makes the best tamales in Fort Worth, I get half whatever amount he makes. I was pushing the Hornady 200 grain Spire point at a moderate 2450 fps, apparently just right for my hog hunting.

Nice.  The Whelen is a good round and quite good for pigs.  At that velocity, it should do the job and not damage too much meat in the process.

I'm happy things went well considering how little of the inside of the rib cage was involved. I think my 30-06 with a corelokt or Ballistic Tip would have done a lot more damage but the Whelen aparently did enough damage. The reason for the low hit was this hog had long white hair at least 3 inches long hanging down under his chest and his mane was pronounced also. The long hair on his chest made me think I was aiming a bit more on him than I was.

Picture of this particular hog if it posts. Why it posted two pics I can't say.

Another perfect use for the 35 Whelen. Congrats Rick!! on taking that nice big piggy. Nice picture too. I noticed they are both the same picture. Thought I was seeing double for a second there. ;)
