"1612" The Movie
« on: September 20, 2009, 08:19:23 AM »
I was at a gun show this morning and a guy selling videos was playing a movie titled "1610".  Only I think that's what he was playing.  [He was too busy with customers to wait to ask]  There was a lot of artillery in the segment I saw with cannons firing bar shot and all sorts of neat stuff.  Did anyone see this movie?

There is a movie that came out in 2005/6 called "The New World", but I think it was also released in some markets titled "1610".   Anyway, it's about the settling of Jamestown and I believe there is some period artillery used by the colonists in one of the Indian confrontations.     It starred Colin Farrell as Capt. Smith and Cristian Bale
as John Rolfe.

Trailer:

Could this be what you saw a segment of?

No, that was not it.  The movie clip I saw had many siege cannons firing at a stone-walled castle.  One of the shot struck the main chain holding the front gate up [only in Hollywood  ::)] and the gate crashed open.   The invading horse soldiers stormed through the gate into the castle and a defenders cannon inside, loaded with expanding bar shot, fired at them [graphic scene].  It's a good video clip of ancient artillery pieces being loaded and fired.  Dom

It does sound interesting.   I did a little digging as to what kind of military conflict was going on in the year 1610.   About all I could find was that Poland-Lituania and Russia were at war.  From 1609 to 1611, the Poles were sieging Smolensk with artillery.   They broke through the defenses a couple of times but were repulsed.  They finally took the city in 1611.

Here's a link at wikiapedia about the seige:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Smolensk_(1609-11)

Maybe there is an European made film about it.

"1612" is evidently a Russian made epic, I've never heard of it before, but the trailer makes it look like it might be worth looking at.

Winged Hussars and cannons and forts--Oh, my!    I hope this get released with English dubbing or sub-titles for Western consumpion.   I want it now!

P.S.

I found it on Amazon and there are several customer reviews.  Basically most said it's only loosely based on history, but as an epic action war drama it was first rate---comparing it to movies like Braveheart and the like.

They mention that there is quite a bit of cannon/siege action too, and it appears that the copies for sale are sub-titled in English,

I can give link which works in both Explorer and Firefox for full movie.  It is in Russian of course as my wife has access to all movies released in Russia. But there is a snag.........I need permission from DD to put the link.   The link takes you to site where all (including those of the "Adult" nature) movies are available, and you must scroll past about 3 to get to this movie. Girls in underwear in provocative poses may offend the sensibilities of older or deeply religious members,or even any kids with access to our forum.
I can send link on an individual basis to members who supply email address ( except to you GARY ) ;D BUT I will email to DD first about posting on general (here)

For anyone just wanting to See the action...........this movie is set in period just after death of Tsar Boris Godunov   He killed his oldest son and following his death his family were wiped out in power struggle.......all except one daughter. Immediately after his death a pretender was given his throne in the name of his son Dimitri who he had secretly killed. This pretender ruled for about a year before he was killed. There followed a power struggle and the Poles took advantage of this to get involved and see what could be gained at this time of Russian conflict.  This is the background.   the story is about his Steward who knows the family secrets / history and was in love with the surviving daughter,he lost her in the outbreak of the power struggle and set off to find her. He was playing cards with a Spanish diplomat and for some reason thought it a good idea to pose as a Spanish Gentleman to aid his search for the daughter.

I thought it would be a bit too rude DD,always better to check. This link holds hmmmmmmmm.maybe Rude is a good term to use  so if easily offended don't ask for it.Is a damn good movie.............after watching it....if you want to return just to the cannons..........then watch the download status bar......your p.c holds it in temp folder I think.............check where on the status bar you are while it is playing..........pause it...........and restart when the bar shows the bit you want.  you get used to it.  I did and I'm no genius..........anybody think this explanation.............and precis of movie is not good enough........can take it up with the Dragon.                  I will give link to anyone who asks.my email is listed.

I did a little reading about this flick, and it turns out that that vulture-like former KGB head and 21st century wannabe tsar, Vlad Putin was responsible for financing ($12 million) this movie, with the intended purpose of this cinematic propaganda being to influence the Russian people to support his political agenda.

Anyway here are two apparently bootlegged clips that show a lot of the black powder related action.

That's the movie.  I caught the seige segment when I was walking past the display table.  They want 30 dollars for the dvd, a bit steep. All in russian too I guess. 1612 not 10, OK.

I'm viewing "1612" for the 3rd time in 3 months this evening. Not a popular movie in my Polish community.

I told John (BoomJ) off line before, that Netflix has it and they offer a trial membership. You can sign-on for I believe it's a month (?) and then cancel if you feel you don't like belonging. It's a deal that you can't beat with a stick.

Quick update....got the movie, 158 minutes, Russian, dubbed in English..excellent, IMHO. Cannons! Sword fights! Just for the action, worth it. Got some nice old cannons, too. And a home made one you would never expect to preform (they can do a lot with photoshop)! Got a couple of scenes either too graphic(!), or some flashes of nudity, so might want to review it before the kids get ahold of it!

BoomLover,
Like the scene where the Polish Hussar's are gallopping into the fortress, and are intoduced to the 'not so nice' effects that can result when flying chain shot comes in contact with the human body? :o

Actually, that was quite an interesting piece he developed. The split ball, with the hinged folding bar that folded into the compact unit to be fired! When it unhinged, I sorta knew what was coming next! Gruesome! Effective, very effective!

BoomLover,
On the whole, I liked this movie, it had some good action scenes, costumes (many of the weapons, and armor were made by a British outfit that did some fine work, I especialy liked the job they did with the Polish Flying Hussar's rigs) and I liked the artillery segments of the flick. As an entertainment it was fine, but GGaskill's post is also actually an accurate description of this movie. The government in power in Russia (meaning Putin) financed this movie, and it was made specifically for the Russian people, with the intended goal being to bolster a feeling of nationalistic chauvinism in them. The film is not historically accurate, and the depictions of the Poles, and all the other foreigners in the movie (meaning every non-Russian) were intended to make them look like the bad guys. I agree, that chain shot was brutal.
I'll be watching this movie a few more times.

As will I! Yep, the propaganda angle was subtle, but apparent, anyone not Russian was kind of a bad guy, but, that was also life in those days! And these days also, looking to build Russian Nationalist Pride. I'll keep it with "Gettsyburg", "Master and Commander", ect, and watch it from time to time.
