Oh Boy!! my new toy arrived from Fred at Bullbery..17ah.
« on: November 02, 2003, 03:07:27 AM »
Fred and I met via a mutual friend who originally got me into contenders. He and I were talking one day about contenders and knives, shooting etc. Well, when he found out that I made damascus knives he had to have one. When it was nearly finished, I called him to let him know that. And, of course, we got to discussing my desire for a 17ah as a first custom barrel for my contender. As I was picking his brain on the details, length, twist, etc.; he said I just needed to call his good friend Fred at Bullberry. So, I did. OH BOY!!!! I called Fred and as a way of introducing myself I mentioned the knife I made for our mutual friend and Fred decided he wanted to have a custom built damascus skinner. So I agreed and moved onto want the call was actually about, 'ME' ordering my first custom barrel for a my contender. Fred is an extremely nice and knowledgeable man, hunter and gunsmith. As he and I got to talking about 17's and he offered that the 17ah is probably his absolute favorite round for the contender. I thought that was pretty neat. Well, if you ever want more information about contenders and the 17ah, call Fred. I promptly figure out that he has forgotten more about the subject than I would ever know. So, in the end, I decided to let him take over the project and build it as he would for himself. We agreed that everything would take a while, the knife the barrel and all. Well I sent out the knife a little while ago and yesterday...'IT' arrived, my first custom Bullberry contender barrel, including all the dies and options, bells and whistles I could imagine. Just the way Fred wanted it. I think it was a sucker punch, he knew he was ruining me. I can never own a regular barrel again. And boy am I glad!!! If you have ever thought about ordering a contender barrel, do it and I can't recommned Fred highly enough. The barrel is a 12inch bull barrel, with hanger bar, minimum chamber, target crown, high polished blue. A work of ART.

I'll let you know how it shoots,  :D

Try 20 grain Hornady bullets and AA1680 powder. I have a 17MIV that loves this combo. I get sub moa groups with fireforming loads. I once sent Fred a picture of a group in the "3s" fired with one of his pistol barrels. He said that with a little practice amd load developement it would do better.

Glad it got there Doc.   I tried to call but missed you, so sent you an email with some forming ideas, powder and bullet lists instead.   Fred's specs for the 17AH is different than the books, so hope this info will help get you started.   Fred IS top drawer all the way (and so is the gent that made my one of a kind knife).

BTW, my 14" will easily shoot in the 2's, and I'm sure would do better with more glass on it (have a Burris 7X Target on it now).  Here's a picture of it in action at Digger Wars '03 last spring...

Digger Wars is a shoot that I host in Nevada for a few of my close friends from around the country each year.   We can shoot diggers 13-14 hours a day if we want to, camp together under the stars and fest on mostly wild game and home made goodies brought by all for the shoot. Have nearly 40 ranches now in three different areas of the state that I use.   Most of the shooting is for Belding ground squirrels in planted fields, although badger and coyote are readily available for out-of-staters.... grey fox and bobcat also can become involved for me (ADC) depending on the circumstances and rancher.   One "field" that we shoot when in the right valley is called Digger Heaven - its 1/2 mile wide by 2 miles long.   You could shoot the full 2 miles if you could see them that far, but Beldings are quite small and the average longest shots taken on a given year are usually around 600-700 yards.   Longest Belding kill at a DW was 3 years ago - at 870.   This year in DH alone more than 1200 were taken in a day and a half with mostly only 2 of us shooting - and without moving the shooting benches once.   We never did work the other 15/16th's of the field this year.   '03 was the year of the 17's, so most of the over 2000 taken in 3 1/2 days were shot with HMR's, Squirrels, CCM's, Ackley Hornets and a few with Mach IV's and at ranges out to about 400 (although I tried a few at 700).   The HMR's and Ackley Hornets were the stars of the shoot, taking 90% of all shot.   A few also fell to 22 rimfires, 22 Hornets, a 22BR and my XP-100 223, and one family made the mistake of lining up and standing tall on their mound when I had a 375JDJ out.   My pards had to leave early this year (had 10 days scheduled) so I ended the hunt early too by going to another ranch several hours a way and took over 400 jacks in two night hunts with the 17HMR's.   500-750 or more shots a day are the norm at DW, depending on what you are shooting, so its great fun when you like to shoot.    Pic of DH...

what were your thoughts on the Mach IV compared to the AH? I'm considering barrelling a CZ 527 to Mach IV. Should I just stick with  my 17AH and be happy? You had a Mach IV but place the AH at the top. I'm not disagreeing,,just interested in your opinions on the two. I probaby will take one or the other to Montana in May 2004...CAN'T WAIT!!!

You're comparing apples to oranges Alan.   The MT hunt will be for PD's that are much, much larger than Beldings and you will be shooting in a lot stronger wind there (probably constant wind at that).   You'll probably want the extra horsepower of the M4 in your case, or better yet, a Javelina or the like shooting heavier bullets for your main 17.

At Digger Wars '03 we had dead calm air most of the time, so even the 17HMR's were taking the Beldings reliably out as far as around 350 yards with the TNT's (and anything under 250 was a sure thing).   The 17AH was the perfect choice when combining precision and power for the Beldings (in all of our guns the 17AH's will easily out shoot the M4's in precision).   I had several 224's, a couple of 25 cal wildcats, a couple of 6mm's and a couple 6.5's along that never fired a shot at this years DW.

Well OK, Richardson's then.... still 25-30% bigger than a Belding on average.   Biggest diff will be the winds in MT then.
