Hoppes9 or Ed's Red is what I use. Clean the barrel until patches come out clean. At the range, fire five shots then clean, fire ten shots and clean, then every ten after that until a hundread. Don't expect decent groups until after the first hundread shots have gone the barrel. Correct me if I'm isn't Sweets 7.62 for removing copper fouling?

Could just be the packing grease they were using as a rust prevention. Clean the barrel until the patched come out white. Any grease left in the barrel will ruin the barrel on the first shot.

How will grease ruin a barrel?  It could make a cleaning problem, but I don't know any way that grease can hurt steel.  The only possibility is if it contains machining chips, then it can scratch things up.

I would expect the grease to be less than evenly spread and the bullet will try to squeeze thru as it's being fired. Grease being a liquid won't compress so the bullet will compress and the barrel may well bulge. I don't know is a rimfire has enough power to do this but have seen a lot of barrels in rimfires that were bulged and would advise against firing with anything in the bore..

Getting mine ready for the range I hit it with some gun scrubber
ran a bore snake through it a few times (I don't have a .17 cleaning rod.  Birthday idea for all of you) ;D
And followed the instructions on the shampoo bottle.  Repeat as nessecary.
Same as I was shooting it.
Would shoot a mag full of ammo.  Quick spritz of cleaner a pull or three with the Bore Snake and another mag till I was through a box.
then I went for sighting in the rifle.

Hog-wash.  Agreed it should come out, but I wouldn't loose sleep over it.

Only maybe if the barrel is fully blocked.....slight residue wont harm anything, believe me ,the barrel starts fouling on the 1st shot you take worse than a slight trace of grease. ;)

Sounds like someone has been reading too much...
I have done some experimentation with
fire lapping a new bore and come to the conclusion
that I wasted a lot of time in doing it.
No difference in accuracy what so ever.
It is a holdover from when people would
season the bore of their muzzle loaders.
this was done kind of like the way
people season an Iron skillet for cooking.
Not necessary with modern steel.
Most bulges I have encountered in barrels
seemed to have been caused by excessive
lead buildup from poor cleaning.

I agree it is over kill.  Although I have done the break in on several barrels and I do notice a lot of copper being removed out the first several cleanings and then little to none after that.
